One fine day!

It really has been a lovely day!

I went and had fun taking pictures.

I love these poppies. The individual flowers don’t last long, especially if it rains (!), but the seed heads look marvellous, and I love the glaucous colour of the stems.

It looks like I’ll have plenty more next year, anyway!

This is the first year I’ve grown cosmos. I am so pleased with them. I shall grow them every year now.

I know this is a weed, and it’ll have to go, but there is something so innocent about it (I know, I know…!)

Years ago, before the trees over the wall were as tall as they are now, this was quite a sunny corner, and it was where I had my compost heap! I think the heap’s main function now is to be home to a wide variety of small creatures. I am very happy to leave them all well alone!

Evening Primrose (with my ever-growing mullein/verbascum in the background) There are some hollyhocks in this area somewhere. They are a bit chewed, but I am hoping they will eventually flower – I’ve never grown them before. I love tall plants!

The ferns have enjoyed the wet weather.

A not-very-clear picture of Elizabeth of Glamis. Having been reduced to a very spindly single stem for years, after the school cut off the overhanging sycamore branches, it has sprung back into life. I am thrilled to see several buds. I have pruned it every year, wondering if there was any point and now – voila!

The astilbe is looking good at the moment (better “in the flesh” than in this photo) It is in its second year, and going from strength to strength. Last year, the flowers lasted for ages and then I left the brown spikes on all through the winter because I liked them so much.

All the containers are living up to expectations now. It never ceases to amaze me how the flowers have responded, given that we’ve had so little sun.

This little fellow looks as if he’s had enough of the sunshine (must be the only one!)

I can’t resist finishing on another picture of that blue sky!
(I have a nasty feeling it might not be there tomorrow!)

Thanks Sticki! It was great being out there today , mowing, deadheading - all those summer jobs that go with good weather!

Oh yes, I vaguely remember that from the distant past!

:-) or perhaps :-( !

I just need a couple of days to myself and a bit of dry weather, neither of which seem likely!!

Hope you get a bit of breathing space. I haven't checked the weather forecast - I find it's better not to these days. I'm driving up to Kirkby Stephen on Saturday. It's a nice drive - just hope the weather is reasonably calm!

And I will be driving to Devon! Some of which I know is flooded!
Safe journey, hope you have a lovely time.

And the same to you - have fun!

That was lovely, Melchisedech. I love the back door (?) shot in particular and the 2nd photo. It's my style of gardening.

The "door" is actually leaning against the back of next door's shed, Tuesdaybear! The "window" is hanging from the wall, and is perpex lined with weed control fabric. I'm glad you like it! I wanted a courtyard effect for the rather large patio, so invented the false building. It often convinces people, especially in photos.

I like a relaxed garden! Although I am constantly tweaking it and it's certainly not particularly low-maintenance. In fact it would revert to wild disorder very quickly! But I get lots of nice surprises when things spread, seed or just pop up, and not too many unpleasant ones!

I'm glad you had some sunshine. We had a whole day of heavy rain here and it looks like today will be the same.
It sounds as if your garden is doing well :o)

Thanks Hywel! Grey cloud today - yesterday looks as if it was just a blip!

Lovely photos Melchi, the door and window are brilliant, you had me fooled :o)

Thanks Annella! Glad you like them.

I liked your courtyard feature too, very clever :o) It was nice reading this today as those blue skies do seem to have vanished again ... though the forecast is looking a bit better over the weekend, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!!

I was completely taken in by your clever door and window effect . . . brilliant! Yes, love it when plants seed themselves, and throw up (nice) surprises :)

Thank you Geranium and Sheilabub! I'm afraid it's been raining most of the day today :-( Still - some of the plants just love it!

Great picutes Melchisedec...that sky is gorgeous!

13 Jul, 2012

Thank you Scottish. I'm afraid the sky's been far from blue today - it's rained most of the time!

13 Jul, 2012

Welcome to Scotland then :))

We have been luckier than most here, but it has been very damp and grey with quite a lot of rain, and much heavier inland. A sunny few hours has been a very rare treat indeed!

Wow, thankyou for showing the blue sky, Mel, I had nearly forgot what it looked like.Hubby bought me a lovely solar water feature for my coming birthday, but it only works when the sun shines! Its amazing, it comes on in full sun and the minute a cloud appears , it goes off again! Oh well, one day! Really enjoyed your blog.

Thanks Rose! I was up in Kirkby Stephen today. The weather wasn't that bad, all things considered, but definitely no blue sky! If we get a fine spell later this year (we can always hope) it will seem like a miracle. And everyone will be posting their own "blue sky" pictures!

Just thinking about your water feature, Rose. I had one once - you could stop it by standing so that your shadow fell across the solar panel! They are brilliant for placing away from a power source, though. I had a little solar- powered fountain on my water barrel when I first got it. It was ridiculously pricey because they were very new, but I loved it. The brighter the sun got, the higher the water reached!

This one has the water pouring over the umbrella , Mel , but as we are not having much sun is not working much at the moment. Its still a lovely garden feature though and our youngest grandchild loves it!

They are fascinating - I remember my father couldn't stop watching it when he stayed with us, because it went on and off, and higher and lower - all courtesy of the amount of sunshine! I have solar lights now, but they have batteries that charge during the day, so they are constant. Of course, that wouldn't work with something you want to see working in daylight!

16 Jul, 2012

Well you could always carry on working at night then Mel! Lol.

17 Jul, 2012

Ho ho!!! :-))
