A visit to Hadrian's Wall

A bit of a non-blog, actually!

I was full of plans to record this trip and post all sorts of beautiful and fascinating pictures of wild flowers etc, but…

We set off early, and filled the tank in Preston. Then it was off up the M6. I love the journey north. I decided to experiment with taking some photos through the car window. Why were all the best views alongside? You just don’t realise how fast you are travelling until you try to do this! There were some great views up ahead, but the eye perceives what it is interested in, and the camera simply records what’s there – not the same at all!!

Still, they weren’t too bad, so here are a few:

As you can see, we had a nice day for it!

This is looking towards Tebay:

And this is driving towards Hexham. (you can see what I mean about photos from the side window!)

We called in at Hexham, had breakfast and then went to the Abbey. OH is from the NE, and we lived there when first married, so this is all old stamping ground. We had no car in those days, and travelled round Northumberland by train and/or bus. A visit to any of the castles was definitely a day trip!

Hexham Abbey – founded in the 7th century:

Looking towards the market square:

In blog terms, this is where it all rather fades away. When we got to Corbridge, we went to the Roman Town, which we have visited many times in the past. I left the camera in the car. I actually thought I’d lost it – it was under the seat, having slipped out of the case and I didn’t discover it until we were home. So there you go!!! And – I know it’s sour grapes – but sadly, owing, I imagine, to the weather flowers were in very short supply everywhere. So I came home feeling that I should be very thankful for the amount of flowers I have in the garden, even though I thought it was so behind.

And thank goodness I hadn’t lost my camera!

Beautiful start, but I was so much looking forward to see HadrianĀ“s wall, once border of Roman Europe.
At least camera was found again :)

So sorry, Katarina! And the Wall is so beautiful - stark, but quite haunting. It was very hot and sunny yesterday, as well. (There is very little shade as the vegetation has all been cleared)

Next time...

Hexham is lovely, Hywel, on the south bank of the Tyne. There's a lovely riverside park there as well. Corbridge, 3 miles away is also a lovely town - well, village really.

Katarina, I will post some photos next time we go - don't know when though. I was disappointed not to get more yesterday.

I was rather pleased with the photos from the car - I've never tried that before. I think I had the zoom setting on for that one.
