Water butts full again

Lots of rain has made gardening challenging recently. Not only that but we have had strong winds, which has meant staking my foxgloves. Anyway, my three butts are full again and have been overflowing for weeks now….

The butts are connected and the overflow from butt 3 has kept the pond well topped up this year. I have two filler hoses leading down to the butts from the two house downpipes. The hoses connect about ten feet up so they can be led around the house and into the yew tree to take them over the path which surrounds the house – see top left of this picture…

The hoses end in my two yellow containers, which act as crude rain gauges. They simply overflow and water enters the butts via the little holes in the butt lids. The butts are located here because they are away from the house doors/windows and near my nursery area and a lot of my pots. I always think plants do better being watered with rainwater.

I’m trying to grow the caenothus over the butts to form a screen. Its getting there quite quickly now and the flowers have been marvellous this year.
