Pond Garden

The large pond has now moved into its second flush of colour and rapid growth of marginals. The marsh mariglods have finished to be replaced by iris.

On this side we have white iris and hosta, backed by an escalonia bush.

We have a nice seat (just in view at the back) for enjoying all this, which catches the morning sun. The main issue at this time of year is the blanket weed, which regularly gets raked off and put in the compost bin. We also have water crowfoot and duckweed to keep our newts, dragon flies, pond skaters, water boatmen, etc happy.

Clambering through the escalonia is a superb double white clematis (can’t remember its name), with large blooms, which last for ages and a centre with a tinge of green. I like this red and white combination, which will be further augmented by the arum lilies now pushing through the red-flowered wild strawberries under the escallonia bush.

The yellow flag iris is now being replaced by the blue iris – both sitting in the pond itself. At the back the Indian rhubarb as grown a lot in the past month (the last plant in the whole garden to get moving), having pushed up its pink flowers before any leaves appear and now absolutely fills this corner. At the back is a stand of yellow-stemmed bamboo and another clambering clematis.

I agree with Stickitoffee, I thought it was a white rose at first.
