It has gotten sharply colder where I live (USA) and there is a big nor’easter coming. For those of you who are unfamiliar with that weather phenomenon it is a powerful storm that rides along our eastern coast from south to north which has damaging winds and can potentially dump between 20 to 30 inches of snow this time of year. So with the weather keeping me out of the garden I have in recent years found a method to give and maintain my body flexibility until the weather turns better. What I do is to take a handfull of coins and throw them down upon on a carpeted floor in a narrow or wide pattern and while standing, I bend down at the waist keeping my legs as straight as I can and pick them up one by one. After picking up one or several of the coins I stand upright again and then begin anew. I do this several times a day in a varied tempo fast or slow and have found that this little exercise gives me the flexibility I need to do gardening without pulling or straining something on my body due to inactivity. I find that picking coins off a carpet a bit easier than a hard floor. Another fun way to accomplish this is Tai Chi but in this blog I decided to describe what I think is my own exercise creation. Do not do the exercise I have described if you have any lower back problems, breathing difficulties, cardiac or vascular problems which can make you dizzy when you bend your head down repeatedly. If any of you have your own gardening fit exercise creations please share them.

Hi Loosestrife ...

That's a great way too Terra!

ha ha ... Loosestrife ... but with a mischievous puppy, can sometimes be a bit too much exercise !

12 Mar, 2017

I hear ya Terra, I have three rescued pomerainians.???

12 Mar, 2017

Oh, three rescued Pomeranians .. lovely ... but, yes, a long way to bend down to those cuties !

We in the Northeast are bracing for the Nor'easter scheduled to strike us on Tuesday. It's bitterly cold out too and we are still digging out from last weeks storm. There's always something to get done indoors.

Hi Paul ... stay safe !

Thanks Terratoonie - I love your new puppy, Neptune. He reminds me of my first puppy I had as a young boy. He was a collie named "Scout" We were inseparable, I would take him fishing and he loved the snow. We were like "Timmy & Lassie."

The coming storm is big enough for the meteorologists to have given it a name and they have named it "Stella". Batten down the hatches and open the shed and garage doors......to get the snowblower out :(

Loosestrife ...
I hope Stella blows through with no damage.

Bathgate ...
The Rough Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs are super breeds aren't they. Lovely to have childhood memories of special pets.

I hate the feeling knowing this storm is barreling straight towards me. The weather forecast is quite daunting.

12 Mar, 2017

When there is bad weather, I feel sorry for the pets and wildlife too ...

12 Mar, 2017

Me too, and I've spied a couple robins in my garden already. They came back too soon.

12 Mar, 2017

Paul, I know that you are kind to the wild birds ... you won't forget to put out extra food.

12 Mar, 2017

Yes, I always keep the feeder full, but the robins want the worms & things that live in the ground.

I read somewhere that a good exercise is to stand on tip toes, ; clutch hands above head and then walk about!
Good when fruit needs picking!

Storms with female names sound "milder" than ones with male names. Or am I being sexist?

I'll let you know on Wednesday. Have you ever played "Cat's Cradle"?

12 Mar, 2017

That's interesting Loosestrife - it appears that you name your winds by the direction they are blowing in. Here we name them by the direction they are blowing from so a northeaster blows down from the Arctic and is very cold.
I love the mental picture of you throwing your worldly wealth all over the carpet! I'll stick to my tai chi I think.
Eirlys, that sounds quite difficult!

New York is preparing for the same storm here in the southern tier we have been upgraded from a warning to an alert, guess we are going to get it!!!!!!!!!! was going to start my garden seeds indoors now but think i will wait another month looks like winter is going to be here for some time?

12 Mar, 2017

Yikes, I've already started my seeds indoors and they just began to sprout. I'm hoping this storm will be the last of the season.

usually i have my seeds sprouted by now but something tells me to hold off, looking at the long range weather forecast for ny it will be some time before i can start the veg , garden . my spring bulbs are coming up and with the new snow i fear they will be ruined,

A northeast wind blows in from the north east towards the south west. A nor'easter is akin to a mini hurricane or a giant cyclone with a counterclockwise cyclonic wind. If it hits our east coast at a high tide, well that's another disaster in addition to the snow or rain. Stera that is not my worldly wealth on the carpet, it only the loose change that I gather up that falls between my couch pillows and underneath my car seats in addition to the pistachio shells that gather there too:)

1993 we had a tremendous storm here in NY some are saying it will equal that. snow was piled so high i could not open the door! had to shovel then get the snow blower out hope it does not get like that in 93.

12 Mar, 2017

I hope that doesn't happen. I remember the 1993 storm with "Mount Everest" piled up in front of my house for a week or so. You and I can expect at least 2 feet. Good Times!

13 Mar, 2017

Right VJD. 1993. We were all digging out for weeks and we we ran out of places to put the snow we were digging out.

Steragram: I read somewhere it's the only exercise one needs to do. I tried it once......for a whole minute! :O)

Bathgate: I have never played cat's cradle. I've just looked it up. Used to play something we called ""Scissors", or "Saw" which started off with the same "moves".

It's good thing to do when you're snowed in and can't go anywhere. As I will be tomorrow.

14 Mar, 2017

Eirlys -just been and tried it for a minute - makes your legs ache doesn't it? I bet its good for fallen arches. Might try to work up enough will power to do it again...

14 Mar, 2017

Vjd I'm close to the coast I got 3 inches and some sleet. Right now 5:00 pm the sun is shining. It took six hours to pass by but the precep wasnt that bad. Looks like Stella decided to do her thing further inland. Please stay safe.

thanks Loosestrife2 , still snowing here in the southern tier of NY.already have around 18 inches, and still have tonight and part of tomorrow they say? am not going to try to dig out until tomorrow. snow plow has got my driveway soo high

14 Mar, 2017

Well, I think the Atlantic Ocean nudged the storm westward, and all we got was a lot of wind, rain, and maybe 4 inches of snow. However is has now become ice which is very dangerous.

My comments kept disappearing before L'strife but for some unknown reason its ok at the moment so I have to tell you, I chuckled when you first posted this blog, my old dad used to do exactly what you have described here and reading through made me picture him also doing his exercises, like Terra we also have a new puppy to keep me on my toes, ours is a lot smaller though as she is a Westie...

15 Apr, 2017

A Westie Lincs, will greatly enjoy keeping you on your toes:) Very glad to hear about your dad and his similar effort to keep his body from locking up.
