Hot Composting - Does it Work?

As mentioned in my blog about RHS Chatsworth, Ive purchased a Hotbin for composting.

First results appear very promising on first day, by following instructions on mix of composted chippings and paper/green waste. The bin temperature quickly rose to 50C. It has remained there for about the last month, so Ive opened it up.

The bin was almost full and the lid temperature (the air space above the waste) showed a healthy 50C

The gauge measuring the composting temperature a typical 60C.

According to the manufacturer this gives a 32X faster result than cold composting. So I reckon at 4 weeks I should get composted waste fit for mulching .
Lets open it up and see shall we?

So removed about a trug full (15L) used for mulching, enough sieved to fill 2 off 1L pots.

This compost wasnt quite fully done, but had only been in 4 weeks. I reckon the next lot will have been in a bit longer so should be less course. Ill keep this blog running.

Ive been asked how it works, it works by the insulation keeping the heat from the bacteria from being lost. The raised temperature increases the rate of bacteria action.
