Some bright spark pinched my ponds...

Yesterday as many of you know it snowed all day and carried on until the early hours of this morning, looking out earlier I saw I had a few jobs that were a priority..

I know there is a pond there somewhere, I can hear the water, so the pump is ok, my bike planter is nearly hidden where it has blown that way and somewhere is the edge of the pond so I have to be careful that I don`t step on the wrong bit, I guess I`d better get the shovel and clear a few spaces….

These guys need my help as well, the cheeky arabs came when they spotted me looking out, how can one resist those, cold fingers yet again but I know they will appreciate my efforts..

Pidgeons not daft, he always knows when the little birds have been feeding that he will also find some under the feeders..

My little mate waiting for dinner, I `ve spread his mealworms around the garden, some on a couple of baskets, more on the raised bed and even thrown some under the spreading Juniper near the pond, the starlings keep pinching them before he gets there so hopefully I have picked the right places..

Thats my gardening stint over for today, batch of scones in the oven, back in the armchair to watch my feathered friends whilst drinking my cuppa…

Had to add an extra pic…

It was worth the cold fingers, I have never seen my robin on this feeder before…
Stay warm folks and if you do have to venture out stay safe…

Its been here a week now Steve, keeps getting topped up..LOL.
Last Friday him and a workmate got home at 11pm, they were trying to get in at a hotel but the first one wasn`t serving food and they couldn`t get through to the others as the roads were blocked, after 9pm it would have been illegal for them to work the Sat shift,( you know all about those taco rules no doubt) they figured getting home was the best option, he is on the same run again today, went out at 1am, I heard from him earlier and although its slow going he is not stuck today, fingers xx..

Hi Sue..
You have some wonderful garden visitors ...
I hope your ponds return eventually ;o) x

They do appreciate it - one of the robins in my garden was actually hanging on a feeder yesterday, not for long mind! They do visit the various feeders like that one. Like you I've been spreading everything around the garden for them. When the magpies and starlings appear - I chuck out some bread to keep them occupied!

so glad you are feeding the birds, they need it in this weather, ive used a whole big 25kg sack of bird seed in the last few days....i think the birds are all telling their friends to come to 'Dawns Garden for a free meal'!

Lovely blog, think we are all suffering the same weather Lincs. Fingers crossed it goes soon.

Lovely blog LL ,my robin usually uses the feeding table but today he as managed to fly and hang on to the feeder full of sunflower hearts never seen him do that before :-)

Beautiful little robin - they are irresistible aren't they?
What a lovely view you have from your garden.

It is so cold here. We have no snow but working outside is painful. I watch our Robin from indoors. They are so friendly.

Love your snow blog, but do be careful Sue last year I walked into the middle of my pond unknowingly, its so easy to do when its covered with snow, luckily the ice was frozen solid underneath so didnt cave in!

Lovely blog Lincslass,I know i keep saying i love the snow and wish we had some but its not funny for you all that have the snow.and hearing about your HO difficulty getting to and fro to work. I hope it improves for you soon, but i do love your pic's :0)

There's nothing else I can say ...

There is something about a robin isn't there? He just completes the perfect winter picture for me.
:-)

Lovely blog, Sue and I think the robin is one of my favourite birds. Do you leave your pump on all winter, then? Talking about falling in a pond, I remember seeing the squirrel and the fox nearly fall in in the bad year of 2010.Not at the same time, of course! Lol.

Lovely blog Lincs, I've been watching blackbirds looking for berries on the pyracanthas, they're nearly all gone tho, must get some food for them and others and probably a feeder.

22 Jan, 2013

Hello Rose, yes I do love the robin, have a soft spot for my doves and blackbirds as well, I like the way they keep me company in the garden, they come very close as well.
We never turn the pump off except for cleaning times, I have slipped in the pond a couple of times over the years, didn`t fancy doing that yesterday, BRRRRR...I also kept the dogs out of the main garden when it got so deep, I didn`t want them getting any daft ideas, normally they know not to trespass near the fishpond but Morgan often takes a dip in the bottom one when he thinks I`m not looking....

Sorry Sue. I hope I haven't offended you. It's just that it depresses me so much lol

22 Jan, 2013

Gosh Hywel you have never offended me in all the years we`ve been on here, I laughed when I saw your comment as I know how you feel about the snow, its been swirling fog here today, we even had a little thaw late afternoon but its freezing again now .......To be honest I `ve had enough now as well, its only nice in the pics, lol....

22 Jan, 2013

That's all right then. I often open my mouth and put my foot in it lol and I've got such a clumsy way of saying things sometimes ... must be my welsh accent :/
It's melting here. The fields are mostly green again

You're getting snow, and we're getting none. But I love seeing it in pictures! Your winged friends are adorable.

23 Jan, 2013

Great blog, Lincslass. Some of the snow from last week is still lying here, but although it has snowed almost non-stop for the last 48 hours (apart from a couple of hours of sunshine yesterday) no more is lying. It must be getting warmer, but it doesn't feel like it!

I love pictures 3 and 5.

So, does keeping the pump on help the pond over winter, Sue? We've never thought of doing this. We even turn it off at night in the summer!

24 Jan, 2013

You've had so much more snow than us.We've been very lucky.all gone now.no more sinceSunday!
We had 3 little Robins in our garden this morning. No doubt, looking for the mealworms I scattered on the lawn.Mind you, they are the only birds I've seen in my garden today, on this 'Big Birdwatch Weekend' !!

26 Jan, 2013

Rose it helps to keep the pond clean as it runs through a filter and even when completely covered with a blanket of snow the fish are ok as the water was still flowing underneath, the pump has never frozen yet however over the years we have seen some marvellous icicle formations..
Paul I have just read the report in our local paper from RAF Wittering weather station and apparently on Monday last they recorded the sixth highest fall in the UK, it was very heavy last night but we had sunshine today and a thaw has started, I even have a patch of green in one part of the garden, first sight of grass in two weeks and the blackbirds are loving it, I did my birdcount today, best one in all the years of recording them, I think it must be due to the snow, however my robin never showed up at all....

26 Jan, 2013

Yes, we always find we get more (and less common) birds when snow/ice covers the fields!
Hoe it clears for you soon though. It must be miserable.we only had a covering for 2 or 3 days and only an inch or 2 deep!

26 Jan, 2013

Paul its absolutely pouring with rain now so that should sort it out for us...

26 Jan, 2013

Flooded roads now instead of icy, probably!!

26 Jan, 2013

Ah, that's sweet! That's the same little metal feeder as I have...with the little birds on it! Lovely!
