Pond work weekend.....

I`ve mentioned before that my youngest daughter moved house 11mths ago, only 5mins dawdle away from us now. The garden had been well cared for over the years and was obviously well loved in its time so this year was more a watching time to see what surprises there would be over the seasons and there were plenty of those, yes a few places had become a little overgrown but we soon sorted them and of course my daughter changed various areas and added shrubs and plants that had been brought from the previous garden.
The one thing missing was a pond, they did one at the other house so it was always a case of when not maybe. This is a before pic.

The liner and underlay had arrived so it was digging time, luckily son-in-law has been at home this week so he was able to get stuck in, he even had to use our pickaxe at one stage…
Yesterday morning I received a text “Its pond digging day :) ur assistance is required”LOL.
I had been expecting it ,they know I can`t resist a job like that, so within mins I was on site.

I wont bore you with all the pics we took, needless to say we had a fun day, by the time we had finished digging we had our pond dug out, approx a metre depth in the middle, a ledge for marginals two thirds around and a gradual slope where the waterfeature/waterfall is going, pond underlay and liner in place and hosepipe turned on.
Whilst the water was running daughter and I raided the garden for large stones for the edging, luckily the previous owners liked raised beds and rockeries..

That was as far as we reached Sat.night, by the time we had eaten dinner,( cooked by daughters hubby whilst we were being creative, lol,) it was too dark to go back out, plus the fact that we couldn`t find anymore edging stones. Grrr.
Sunday back in action with more stones snaffled from my garden, plus a few plants for the pond..

It was at this point that my girl said "Mum the slabs have got to go, they don`t look right!!!!!!!!
Have to say after looking from all sides and angles, even upstairs, I had to agree my girl was right, so out they came, good job we had plenty of stones from good ole mums garden…
Soon sorted, we don`t hang about..

Yes it was us doing the work, daughter is building up the water feature ,I`m on muck shifting to rebuild the garden.

As you can see there is a gravelled area with a bench to sit and admire our work..
Along the back fence there is a Clematis, we had to prune it at the start, it was top heavy you cannot see on the pic but its been cut right down, so hopefully it will be better next year as it can be trained back properly, lots of spring bulbs planted as we went along..

Knew somebody would have to be nosey…

Think it looks good Mum???

More plants to be added as yet and a pump to get for the water feature but all in all I think we did well..
That was a good weekend….

Brilliant ! It's looking very nice. All the hard graft was worth it.
Nice to be able to help your children isn't it.
And nice to have helpful parents (I didn't - well not in the garden anyway)

Is that you sitting on the bench ? Well now I feel like I'm talking to a real person at last :o)

I,m really impressed by all your hard work and the end result does you proud. I, too, would love a pond but we are limited for space and someone else would have to do the necessary maintainance, so that's a no-no. Really enjoyed your blog...

Well done, Lincs and Co. ... you could go into business as you're so efficient! ... I love the way you wrote: snaffled a few stones from my garden! ... they're not stones .. they're rocks ... lol! It's going to be lovely in the Spring when the bulbs are blooming ... :o)

Have you thought about a water feature Breda, I have two of those as well ( i`ve just realised I have two ponds and two greenhouses, also the garden is separated into two gardens, how weird, lol,) you could just have a barrel or something...

Thanks Shirley, we really enjoyed doing it and my daughter is really pleased with it. You`d be surprised how many things go backwards and forwards between our gardens, I`d love to get my hands on some more of those stones but these days they are so expensive, nobody gives them away anymore...

Occasionally on Freecycle there are offers of York stone or stone from rockeries . . . don't know if you belong to a Freecycle group at all? ... We got some old pavers for the allotment ... just collected them from the member's driveway ... didn't even see the owner! ... The wonders of technology ... :o)))
