Do you want to see what I got from the garden centre today?

Our weather wasn’t supposed to be too bad today. I don’t think our weather knew this. It has been spectacularly grey, overcast then turning to rain. Oooh, no change there then.
On a cheerier note, a friend I haven’t seen in a while and I arranged lunch and a visit to my favourite garden centre in Gargrave – Twin Locks. I needed a BIG pot for Rambling Rosie and decided to replace some of the worst hit plants with something cheerful – and more importantly not dying!
We had a pub lunch and you will be proud of me Annella, I had lime and lemonade instead of the usual glass of vino – and then trundled into the gc. It wasn’t busy, but all the plants looked very healthy. I got my big tub and 3 new plants. Here they are.

Difficult to judge the scale. trust me, it’s big. Supposed to be frost hardy too!

Sidelcea ‘Little Princess’ and Hardy Antirrihnum ‘Eternal Flame’ Pics a bit washed out – quite literally, but Little Princess is the most beautiful delicate light pink.

I keep buying hydrangeas – they are a particular favourite of the sheep. This one is called ‘Hot Red’ Although the flowers are more of a deep cerise.
It’s pouring down now, so I can’t plant them out just yet. Also going to do a bit of digging up and replacing, so don’t want a mud bath lol. Mind you it would be in keeping with the Yorkshire Spa!

Super buys there Jane....I like Sidalcea, I have a slightly darker one. There is one that grows in a house round the corner from me that is a deep raspberry pink - it is beautiful and have never seen one so dark in the GCs.
Hydrangea looks lovely too - have you checked the hardiness of it - I was always under the impression that the red ones weren't very hardy!
Pleased you had a nice day out despite the weather :)

Hi Scottish. no I haven't checked I didn't think to. To be honest, the sheep normally eat them, and nothing is hardy enough to withstand that. I have several mangled ones in pots, that aren't quite dead, but ain't far off!

Isn't it nice to come back with plants?! Yours are lovely choices and I hope they will be very happy together for a long time to come!!

Lovely blog, lovely plants Jane - glad you had a good day. (I went out for lunch too, but (sorry) had a large glass of pink :)) Sidalcea is one of my favourites . . . grow it in a pot to show it off!

Oh Sheila, I would have loved a glass of pink, but my friend wasn't drinking and I'm trying to lose weight, so I was good. Mind you, I had chips then..........lol.
Glad you all like my plants. They are sat on the garden bench getting very rained on. Jx

Thanks everyone. Yes it was a lovely afternoon. Am just looking forward to planting them out. Am going to have a bit of a move around and clear out! I did vow I wouldn't spend any more on the garden this year. Ummmm, that lasted a long time didn't it! Jx

I like your big pot. It's very nice. Your new plants are interesting. I've never seen a hardy Antirrhinum. I didn't know there was such a thing.

17 Jul, 2012

Neither did I Hywel but it looks a smasher. Glad you had a good day Jane, had to laugh about the slimming and chips.

It's so hard trying to lose weight (well, if like me you've no will-power). I had a cold chicken thigh for my "lunch" the other day, then was so hungry at tea-time, "had" to have a toasted tea-cake!

Well done! I love that pot and the plants especially the Hydrangea (one of my all time favs). Try drinking Ribena quickly and pretend you have just necked a Rose. 11 calories in Ribena light, goes up a bit if you have it with chips though hun xx

Love the pot and the flowers too I've never seen a red hydrangea it looks gorgeous ..........pity you couldn't sheep proof it :o))

Glad your miserable weather day turned out cheerful and successful Jane. That pot is fab, and I love the Hydrangea too! :D

Aw, thanks guys and gals. I've been at work on my market stall all day and it was a bit sunny when I got home, so I have just spent 4 hours in the garden weeding, deadheading, staking, moving things around and planting my new plants. Don't know where time has gone. I haven't even touched the veg plot yet and that really needs a good session - like about 4 days not hours lol. Jx

18 Jul, 2012

Oooh Jane, what do you sell on your stall? Isn't it great to just get out and potter for a little bit?

18 Jul, 2012

Hi Karen I sell the glass things I make, jewellery, coasters, plates and dishes etc. I think there are some pics on an earlier blog.
Yes it's fab to get outside for a bit. Any dry time at all is in the garden. The ironing can wait. Jx

I shall go and look up your blog Jane...thank you!

Splendid investments (and you can't say that about much these days!) Jane. We were given a pink hydrangea 7 years ago, and it's been doing ok so far, but this year I gave it a huge pot of its own, plus two stiff doses of sequestrine and a big kiss, and now it's turned deep red and given us a display to rival Tatton. So, yes, red (ok, deep cerise) hydrangeas can be very hardy, Scottish - ours is regularly buried under feet of snow.
Do you know, I had no idea antirrhinums came as hardy? Well I never - I love this one.

Thanks Gat. I didn't realise either. Quite often my annuals? do a couple of years running..............well they do if the sheep don't get them. Jx

I'm thinking that you seem to have a bit of a problem with these pesky sheep of yours - have you considered a big freezer and industrial quantities of lamb stew?

24 Jul, 2012

Lol. Ohhhhhhhhhh yes. Big freezer in barn - at the ready. :o))

24 Jul, 2012

Beautiful Jane - me catching up today x

I know the feeling Paul. I am sooo busy at the moment, I just keep having a quick glimpse, don't really have time to look properly. Glad you like them anyway. Jx
