Severe weather warning

*The Met. office have, tonight, issued a severe weather warning for Wales, the Midlands and northern England!

Heavy rain will increasingly turn to sleet and snow, falling onto already frozen ground and existing ice making travel (for both road users and walkers) in these areas extremely difficult.

You are advised to check with the Highways Agency for disruption to motorways and major trunk roads*

Please excuse me putting this in the gardening category but I thought it would be more visible this way

Such a shame for people who can't get out around Christmas. We've been slipping and sliding here since Friday but a lot has cleared up now just the side roads and pavements that are hazardous!

That's right Joanella. Lol

Paul, we had just got to about the same situation but when we went out earlier it was raining and -1. Two hours later we had a good couple of inches and it was like an ice rink. That was why I checked the weather on line!

Yes, we've had freezing rain here today. Miserable!!!

23 Dec, 2009

Yes sleet here at the moment, just been on a christmas booze cruise, lol, to tesco, roads are treacherous, luckily not far away.

23 Dec, 2009

It's just started to pour with rain again here. Hope it doesn't freeze, the side roads are bad enough already!!!!

Simbad, if your in the north of the county you might just escape! Fingers crossed ah?
I think you're a bit south of the warnings Paul but you never know with the Met. office !?!

Hi Ian I think there are, basically, severe weather warnings for most of the UK... The temperature crept up to a balmy +0.5 C today but is now heading down again and more snow due. Don't drive unless you need to, if you do take a shovel, sacking, a flask with a hot drink and some food, plenty of warm clothes, a flash light, your cell phone. Also tell someone you are going to travel to X and that you will call when you arrive... and give an estimate of how long it will take - then if the person does not hear from you they can alert the authorities. I used to travel over the Dava Moor all year round. When the weather was bad I would alway let Mr MB know I was setting off back home and 'should' arrive by X time. Do not assume that your mobile phone will work everywhere - it wont! Be prepared to walk away from your car and get to somewhere safe on your own two feet. But basically don't drive unless you really need to!

Hi MG, good sound advice there. I used to carry a shovel with me in this weather when I drove for a living!

We seem to be better off than many here in Kent (south). Freezing rain and sleet today and lots of icy pavements and side roads but our main roads are OK, thank goodness. Happy Christmas to you and your family, Ian, and all the best for the New Year.

-10 overnight and has now crept up to -8... potting shed door frozen shut

24 Dec, 2009

Still terribly icy/slippery pavements and side roads but , as I speak, our dustmen are collecting our recycling wheelie bins. Our day is usually Friday but they couldn't come last week due to snow. What with xmas and new year day falling on Friday I thought we were going to have to wait 4 weeks between collections but good on them they're doing it today>Better get out there with a xmas tip I suppose!
I'm releived because most people's bins are already overflowing without all the xmas wrappings etc!

24 Dec, 2009

I gave them a tip " don't try and turn the lorry round at the end of the road, it's too icy!" I know, I'm just too generous!!!

24 Dec, 2009

Thanks Ian but i wont be going out my door in this except to keep up with bird feeding, merry xmas to you and your family.

Thawing a little bit here, paths were terrible this morning when I took the dog, even with my trusty walking boots nearly slipped a couple of times, then mid morning the council came round gritting the pavements, never known them do that!!!!!

24 Dec, 2009

We have had sleet and snow showers on top of ice here today Ian its leathal trying to walk.

24 Dec, 2009

Thank you all for your lovely Christmas wishes and we all wish you the very, very best. Here's hoping for a happy and peaceful new year to all.

I've been out this morning to get milk and the like and the roads are very treacherous and slippy. Take care if you have to go out yourselves,

24 Dec, 2009
