*The first sunny day for ages*

Today has been a lovely sunny day, the first for nearly two weeks.
so after finishing clearing the veggie beds of nasty blight ridden tomatoes and potatoes.

Even Holly had to lend a hand

plus the mildew covered peas

we decided to go for a little trundle around Rufford park.
Thankfully they loan scooters out by the hour so that saved my legs !!!

This kid gets everywhere, she’s a proper poser Lol

Although I did manage to get a few shots off without her !

Now at this point, I am going to need some help,
as you know my knowledge of plant names is smaller than a gnats ….. (censored due to graphic description)

The purple leaves are what I would like to know the name of?

The next two were taken in the partair? (I know that’s spelt wrong) complete with its lovely box hedging

It just doesn’t seem to be my week, I’ve done it again.
I’ve lost the rest of the photo’s I took today so you’re going to have to rely on my skills (Lol) as a narrator for the rest of the journey !
After we had played on the park and chased each other round the maze for a while (boy do you get some funny looks when theirs two mobility scooters and a screaming child haring around a wooden stake maze) we decided that cold drinks and ice cream were in order.
So after a quick trip to the cafe and ‘two’ ice creams later we trundled off in the direction of the lake and its fabulous views. (I had a really nice photo to show you here).
While we were down that way it seemed a waste and in fact a crime not to visit the garden center, and as so many GoYers seem to have been so lucky, I headed straight for the ‘bargain shelf’ but just my luck this week the only things there were a few strawberry plants (I’ve now got loads of my own) and a dead looking thing that was so pot bound it had strangled itself.
Carol found two lovely Lupins (I know they flower in the spring but they’ve got buds on so who knows????) and I added twelve lovely silvery foliage thingies (I’ve got a label somewhere Lol).
So in conclusion (your honour) it appears all you ‘lovely’ flower growers have got your own way and both Carol and myself are firmly hooked and if you wouldn’t mind just reeling us in and taking this hook out of my mouth, I would be a lot more comfortable.

So glad you've finally seen sense and crossed over to the flowery side of things Ian! Is that you in the background in pics 3 and 4 with Holly? :~))
I think the purple leaf shrub is Cotinus Coggyria (Smoke Bush to you and me) probably Royal Purple variety. Not sure about the white daisies, could be Feverfew or some sort of Marguerite (or whatever they call them these days) . Others will know better than me!
By the way, carrots do have a certain appeal LOL

Thanks all for the lovely comments.
Lily2 I can't understand why you don't have row after row of them (carrots) the only reason I don't is there would be no room for my beloved potatoes..... :~))
You are cheeky you ! No its not me in the background..... Its a life size model of ..... well me actually Lol
Mookins, I was very good there and didn't have any Ice cream at all...... I thought the two cream cakes was enough !

I think that purple bit is a "smoke bush" - wch could b the common name for cotinus for all i know. I'm just a commoner though, enjoying the simple things in life!

No gardening really today, unless you count a mad dash around for a few bits of rubbish to stuff the green bin full (see first blog, if I've not deleted it).

In two days time at a local show there's to be a "longest runner bean" category, so I'm thinking of taking the plunge with... so far... (rushes out to garden with measuring stick)..... drum roll please.......34cm!!

Oh well done weeding, (Is that long??? I mean what is that in feet and inches, I can't do foreign.... Lol) and thanks for the identification. :-))
Good luck with the show ! ! !

erm, now huntin 4 measure that i've prob left s-where logical like in the fridge drawer...

30 Jul, 2009

About thirteen and a half inches - no, I'm not - I googled it.

30 Jul, 2009

Where else would you leave it? Weeding, seems like the logical place to put things like that. Lol
Cheers Wagger, I just can't get my head around foreign even though they tried to knock it into my head at school. :-))

brainiac husband says 13 and a bit '' - ? Tape measure eloped along with my mobile phone, the spare keys, Elvis and Lord Lucan, it seems.
Apologies to Lily2 cos she's already said smokebush (nearly wrote smackbush, whoops, that would probably get me arrested tut tut)
Lookin back at these pics - what a terrible shame after all your work on the veg. Hope all is not lost? On another blog did you still have some young climbing bean plants?

30 Jul, 2009

I think Elvis and Lord L. eloped on the back of that horse that went missing, but I can't remember its name now ! ! ! ! ! !
Yes I've got 5 runners beans, about 4 inches high, 4 peas, less than an inch, swede, cauli and carrots, just peeping through and loads of radish, everywhere (Holly got hold of the packet of seeds while I was doing the other veg) Lol

Shergar was the cuddy your thinking of Ian

30 Jul, 2009

She's the fellow Mac. I'm totally confused now LOl :-))

I'm so ridiculously proud, our bean came romping in in second place, so I got my first mini certificate ever and it's going up on the kitchen wall!
(no sour grapes, but we could tell the 1st prize one wch was def longer was also WELL stringy, heh heh! smug look... cos ours was beautiful)
The local village show was ace, though horrible rain the whole time,
and at the auction at the end we successfully bid for meringues, carrot cake, a whole box of lovely homegrown veg. Honestly I wish I could have taken you all along, you'd have loved it. : )
Shall I post a photo of the certificate?!

nice to see you're wetting the bean's head!
Husband and son found 2nd-longest-bean's (that reminds me of dances-with-wolves...) best friend and we ate him for tea tonight with the roast.
I couldn't find him last night when I looked, thought I must be going mad(der)
And now I can't find the camera for pic. I'll blame Lord Lucan & Shergar again.
I'll put up a pic one day I promise.

Yours in friendship,
Loses-absolutely-everything x
