I woke up in a war zone this morning !!

When I went to bed last night, I lived in a small(ish) town where the local news was as boring as many other small towns. Now don’t get me wrong….Thats exactly as I like it, but when I got up this morning my back garden (the veggie garden) resembled something like a scene from the battle of the Somme !!!

My usual morning routine is to take a good long look out of the kitchen window while I’m putting the kettle on for Carol and I, just to check and admire my handy work, but this morning my peice was shattered by the picture that was presented before my sleepy, half open eyes!! Veggies in all states of distress.

Onions flattened

Carrots, crushed

And my lovely new Poppy looked like it had been decapitated

Even my passion fruit had been ripped away from the fence !

But being a brave GoY soldier, I went straight into action, fixing a cane, to hold the poppy until it has time to recover

Carefully splinting its broken stem by tying it to the cane and loosely tying to the fence wire

After this ordeal I had to check out the rest of my ‘babies’ and sure enough in the front garden there was more carnage

Marigolds smashed into the ground

Even the Dwarf Dianthus had taken a beating

And what you ask had caused such utter devistation?

Rain.

All of this mass destruction had been caused by a God almighty storm, which apparently had woken everyone else in the house…..except me.

Holly (our little angel) had been crying to me because of the noise(never heard a thing)
Carol had been up two or three times (no nothing)
Even Carol’s mum had woke and made tea for everyone (never even smelt the kettle)
Now I do have to take ‘meds’ at night and they do make me sleepy but to have missed what was apparently “the worst storm I have ever heard” according to Carol, and slept through all the comotion that ensued, surprises even me.

I hope your night was more peacefull and you didn’t suffer as Carol and her mum did, (Holly jumped into bed with me and was snoring in a matter of minutes, so she was all right!!)

I'm very impressed Ian, all that attention for a 'flowery thing' (poppy) - are you being won over at last? What sort of first aid did you do for all those veggies?

12 Jul, 2009

We had 1 of them storms last week, so hoping not to get anymore.

Thanks all.
Louise, Mobee, the least said about Carols mood today the better. !!!
Angie, TEA, no thank you, dreadful evil stuff (Lol) Coffee for me please :~))
Now Lily, I only spent so much time 'caring' for the poppy because I knew my soldiers (veg) are HARD, TOUGH and quite capable of looking after themselves for a while, while I was forced to tend to the soft, flimsy, delicate little thing that couldn't even lift its poor head this morning. Lol
OK, OK, I admit, I like the soft, flimsy, delicate little thing.
A bit, sometimes, when I'm in a good mood..........:~))

Oh your poor plants Ian........we havnt had any storms , but heavy rain on saturday night....... but yesterday was dry with really strong winds ...... my veggies all leaves going brown from the wind..... plants all knocked about... my new cosmos planted on friday was bent over double and like you had to do a bit of fixing..... had to stake up my calendula plants which were just flowering.....but its amazing how quickly the plants recover..... with a bit of sun........

Just look what rain can do.............and I thought it was supposed to help the gardener!! How wrong can I be?

Hi Holly and Silverbelle,
It was an unusual thing to wake up to. I thought some animal had been jumping on my veg and it took quite some time to sink in that it was the rain.

O.M.G. Ian your poor garden and Oh My what a storm that must have been, and you slept through it???? :o)
Gill said she wishes she could sleep through storms she hates them,I love watching the lightning.

Oh Ian...I have only just seen this!!! what a calamity....your poor plants.....that poor poppy...hope its feeling better now and everyone has calmed down....lol
A storm flattening the garden is my worst nightmare, particularly this year with masses of dahlias in pots all over the garden.....they are growing as we speak!!!...we have just had some thunder and a downpoor (not the hailstones as forecast, fortunately)....the sun is shining now and it is still hot and muggy......whilst looking at your pics of devastation I noticed one small anomoly.....er your dwarf dianthus?.....that pic, if I believe my eyes....is of a double or rose flowered impatiense (busy lizzie)...is that right?.......anyway...hope you are back in favour after sleeping through the storm...>:))

Sorry about your veg Ian; I slept through a storm as well but I really welcome the rain as I'm off to Cornwall for a week and feel much better if the garden has had a soaking before I go. We need the rain here in London- I planted a shrub last week and was shocked how dry the ground was once I had dug down a spit.We still need to irrigate here at Kew.Mind you, I don't want it to rain in Cornwall!

Lol Rbtkew, I know what you mean, we never seem to be happy with the weather, if its nice for more than a week we complain about it (but go to far off climes, and sit on a beach in it every year) and if it rains for any length of time we all buy boats and cry global warming.
But its playing havoc with my veggies (Lol)
