Sea Holly

Recently I saw lots of sea holly –
Eryngium maritimum –
growing on dunes near here. I took some photos of it. I haven’t seen so much for a long time.

It grows in arid conditions like you get on a sand dune, and even in full blast of the Atlantic winds !

This old light house is also there. It has been restored from a ruin. It doesn’t work now.

There are views of the Gower peninsula if you look across the bay.

And there’s a pleasant little marina with yachts.

There are lots of interesting flowers on the dunes but their photos didn’t come out very good – it was blowing a gale and the sun was glarey.
Maybe I’ll take some better pics on another day soon :o)

In the meantime here’s some more sea holly ……..

Marvelous how it can grow in such dry places :o)

It's amazing how these tough plants tolerate such difficult conditions isn't it, Hywel? Gales, storms, occasional sunshine! Lovely blog ... : o ))

The coastline of Wales is very beautiful, I remember my first (and only) visit 40 years ago to the Gower and one day might make it back!

What a lovely blog. You never fail to impress me with what you see through your camera lens. I like the way you get up close and personal with what you show us as if we were there with you. The Coast programme was on the other night and they were in the Gower looking at how the farmers keep their sheep on the flood plains of the salt marshes which are covered in sea at high tides. It gives the mutton a very different flavour. They also went down to the rocks with a knowledgable lady who collected lava sea weed and cooked it. Have you tasted it. Seems to be a bit of a delicacy.

It's called laver bread Scotsgran. It looks black and sloppy but it's delicious :o) Nice with cockles and some fresh crusty bread .....
The coast here looks across a big estuary towards Gower

Granyb Pembroke Dock is about 70 miles from here :o) Can't say I've ever been there actually.
I'm pleased you enjoyed it though :o)

LOL Joanella :o)))

Thank you all my friends :o) ...........

I am having great difficulty with GoY. It doesn't want to show me my homepage :o( And it keeps asking me to log in when I never log out !
And it will only accept my photos at 4 o'clock in the morning lol :D
I'm getting quite irritated with it actually :o(

It doesn't matter what I do Sandra :o(

Sixpence there's nothing much in that place. It's a small village. There are two nearby towns some miles away.

My computer misses letters too Chris, and it puts the wrong ones in the wrong places lol ;o))

Thanks everyone :o)

This is the main town of where I could exchange to it s an old miners cottage no shops there either the village is called Abergynolwyn its with in the Snowdonia national park but not have any facilities there put me off and not knowing the area, have a laugh its next door to a chapel lol like I am now but it has nt got a back garden only a court yard and front garden.

22 Jul, 2011

You've got the wrong area Sixpence. This place is on the south coast, not far from where I live. It's between Llanelli and Carmarthen.
Snowdonia is over 100 miles away from here.
