I don’t know about you, especially those of you further south but I feel cheated out of Summer this year. Not unusual I know but we were ‘kidded’ into being optimistic after such a warm/dry start. At this time of the year I always become melancholy with the prospect of dark morning/evenings. This pic posed a dilemma as on the one hand the cheery singing was heartwarming, but the reason why they gathered was a stark reminder that soon we’ll be getting up in the dark.

we never seem to have a summer anymore and this spring seemed to last right up to june, tho i have to say i like those dark crisp mornings when i can smell winter in the air,i never listen to the weather reports anymore as they are almost always wrong here, love your pic its sad to see them go and im now listening out for the geese flying over, chris

I too hate the passing of summer and what a short one its been this year, due to the late onset of spring and a very cold/wet August. But at least after the long summer draught my garden is no longer dusty and suffering.

One of the great things about this site is that when it's cold n' wet we can sit and reminisce or discuss what to do in the garden next year. Wouldn't it be awful if you managed to complete/finish all your plans, what would you do? As for weather forecasts, I suspect that they who arrange it live in the City and never garden. On the radio we get two minutes, we used to get five.

How I agree with you, Heron, having been away for four days and returning to find Cosmos blown over in the wind, Gladioli snapped off and all the Sweet Peas going to seed I wonder where Summer went ! May and June were warm and sunny, that's about it down here ! At least we don't have the terrible floods other parts of the world have, Pakistan especially,

In one way I am looking forward to the Autumn. I have some trees being removed and new ones/shrubs to put in, also some of my perennial beds are not working so lots of moving around, lets not forget the bulbs to plants and the winter baskets. Then its xmas to organize then its snow drop time?

OH and myself have discussed many times the weather (as you do) and we both say the same thing..Wind turbines..Are they really as helpful as they are made out to be? If so why the sudden change of weather conditions? Personally we feel they have a lot to answer for...

I also enjoy Autumn D not because the garden is dying and looks awful and untidy, but its time for change! Love reorganising and preparing a new look for spring, but you really whizz through the year D you made me laugh

24 Aug, 2010

I must admit I am now looking forward to re-arranging my garden especially now I know what colours I have :-)

There is always something to look forward to in each gardening season Heron even though when it is time to empty your pots and contaners ,you can then fill them up for Autumn and spring once again......Drc726 like Dido you made me laugh with your whirl through the seasons.

24 Aug, 2010

local paper said its the end of summer ...well... I felt like writing to the editor ! grrrrrrrrr said leicestershire has has 3 times its usual august rainfall already!
and yes I also wonder about such things as the turbines, birds are said to be sent off course or hurt by them and mobile phone signals confuse and kill the bees, we do these things but we do not understand the consequences

24 Aug, 2010

omg pam never herd that bt bees hun. that's so bad. i can hardly get a signal were i live tho. unfortunately i need it 4 business we were told it said in the paper xpect sleet and snow in sept. lot of rain and bit sun here today. just bin out and planted 200 bulbs and still more to do .;o)

hi Heron, im with you on feeling cheated out of summer, although everything hsa flowered and come up great i have not sat out in the garden at all, maybe i was too busy to notice the sun lol..only saying yesterday last 2 days here have been like winter..:o)

24 Aug, 2010

Well Cristina our gardens have been thoroughly dampened but it's not dampened your enthusiasm. looks like you've been busy, like the sound of the trellis.
When you say "rose cuttings" do you mean prunings only it's early to do "cuttings" Speaking of which, on Sunday I couldn't resist buying a rose even though I've no room for it. My nose was dragged toward it. Not only has it got an old fashioned scent but it's powerful too.
We've decided to give it to Pen's Mum as an Anniversary gift next Spring. Come late Autumn I'll give it a prune and .......now for the thrifty bit, I'll turn the prunings into cuttings and pop them in the ground.
I'll do a few so if you fancy one, let me know. It's called "Mum in a million"

We had a lovely hot Summer here in the south east Heron but it was ever so brief. It feels like August hasn`t happened at all and September was put in its place. I`m not ready to say goodbye to the sun yet but I think I`ll have too...:o(

24 Aug, 2010

it's the same here, August has been a washout, the flowers are looking very sad now with the rain on them, but I'm hoping that September will be much better and I can get on with moving plants around ready for next year :-) so I guess I'm still optimistic at the moment ;-)

ahhh heron you know me lol. yes that is wot i mean . have planted that bed up now, with a bit of advice from spritz. with lots of dwarf anemones snowdrops iris. ground cover... roses.. lol , and some allpines . be nice wen it spreads, made an arch next to stable and bought a white potato vine, have a new rose i did from the one over the arch that has taken of so going to move that as its very vigeris.
You know me love roses ,so yes i wud love one ,and i think i am a mum in a millon 2, wot a fantastic nam, wot color is it. you need to come back and see the gardens over the rd bbfor its all over and let penny ride sunshine properly ............ think she will love that ;0)))) ps peas are flowering at last ,mixed colors . its a bit briter here to day, not had it as bad as some . but you right .not long now till the dreaded monthes ahead, but lets not b gloomy !!!!!!!!!!!!! going to plant the rest of my bulbs later , enjoy while you can , chritina.

25 Aug, 2010

Got to go out now but just a note before I forget, The "white Potato vine" is a stunner, I had one once but it's not as frost hardy as you may think. A good idea is to cover roots with straw or something and wrap the whole of the rest with sacking during the bad months.

25 Aug, 2010

ok heron will do .its down the bottom nxt to greenhouse so its in a shellterd spot wot bt if i plant a rose wth it to may be protect it a bit more. ?

25 Aug, 2010

Cristina sitting here I keep getting a really strong wiff of 'Mum in a million' in a vase, I'll see you get a cutting. It's a girly pink. As for the Solanum, even though it is sheltered I would protect it, at least until it's established.
Your Sweet pea is also developing different colours like yours, rather nice. Pen's just arrived and said she would love to come again, early September perhaps, the Autumn colours should be good.

25 Aug, 2010

girly pink erhh just my cup of tea ,can't wait. have dun 9 pots of wallflowers from seed , lol up bt 1/4 " now or a bit more lol so wen u come back you can have some of those .......... if u like them that is . the colors on the pea are lovely. aren't they . will dig out a hat 4 her to ride tell her . have bin doing the side border to day riped a load stuff out .will b looking 4 something to put there, very shady next to conservatory .
