goldfinches

I was with my grandson over the weekend and we were looking out of the kitchen window when we spotted two goldfinches sitting on the garden fence. What suprised us next was that the finches landed on their uncut lawn which sadly has loads of dandelions growing in it (this is because they have just moved to this house and they have no lawnmower!!) and then proceeded to eat the dandelion ‘clocks’, I have never seen this happen before and was amazed, maybe we should let these ghastly weeds grow because nature always has a way of dealing with things. My grandson loves to blow the ‘clocks’ then throws the stalk and runs to the next one, but these beautiful little birds actually ate every seed on the clock by picking each one of and nibbling the seed. I know these birds love niger seeds because I have a niger feeder but I have never seen this wonderful site take place before. It’s funny I still find nature incredible, and at my age, daft aren’t I ????

oh i do wish they'd nibble our clocks, they're everywhere and driving me nuts!
Nice that at least they've eaten some of yours : ))

Why would you be daft ?
It must have been fascinating to watch. I've never seen any creature eat any part of a dandelion before.

Not daft - just 'join the club!' I am also 'of an age' and I love to watch the goldfinches tearing into thistle heads or, at the moment, picking out the seeds of Alexanders, then flying onto our hazel tree and wiping their beaks before flying off to the next meal. Hywel, rabbits luuuurve dandelions and when my children were small they regularly picked a bunch to give him as a treat. In nature everything's useful to something - but I've yet to discover the use for slugs and snails! lol ;o)

I get your point..see it on the bright side, life in general is a never ending learning institution...and could't agree more with Hywel.I'm running out of dandelion, our rabbits love them so much....have to pick some frantically in our neighbours wine garden.

Ah awfully kind of you...ha ha ha....but you're absolutely right...adults should be more like kiddies....loosen up a bit...then life will so much easier...after all...kids don't have boundaries!

I have noticed how many dandelions there are this year too.Must be natures way of trying to tell us something...food for the finches, maybe to build them up after the harsh winter??I would love to think that is the reason.:o)))
