Rose (for my file) and Thorney (Rosa)

This is the flower of the Rose I am growing in my garden from a sucker. It is a very old French variety.

That's a beauty, similar to my climber but not as dark. If the scent is anything like mine it's a winner. I have half a dozen 2 year old babies from cuttings. First time tried with seed and cutting compost and got 6 out of 8 so I give the compost a good rating yet it's not expensive.

Thats good going Thorney. I usually put my cuttings and seeds in 2/3 compost, 1/3 horticultural sand. Rose cuttings I put straight in the ground into a hole made with a spike and sand dribbled in.

I used to do that after seeing it on gardeners world years ago but after trying seeds in the compost and getting a very good percentage rate I tried lots of other things with it. The rose cuttings went in a long Clematis pot, around the edge and left in a shady place. I couldn't believe the success rate myself but I'm a great believer in right place, right time. I think the "green fingers" thing is just nature doing her job and happy with the conditions.

I agree, Thorney. Planting is the easy bit, it's remembering the after care in pots for me. It is simpler to hand the responsibility over to nature, if she pleases.
