On my wish list Dawnsaunt.. how do you protect it in Winter ?

6 Nov, 2008

We just bend the leaves over the crowns in the Autumn, usually when the leaves are beginning to die back. I just snap the stems and put the leaves face down over the crown. As there are lots of leaves and they are large, the crowns are well covered. We leave it like this until it's beginning to send up new leaves in the Spring. We get lots of frosts here and the gunnera keeps surviving. :-)

I love these but there is no where I can put one of these because they get so big...probably would not do well in our heat...

No Skippy, I dont think they would like your heat, they like shade and moisture :-(

Thanks Amy, looking forward to seeing it looking like this again in the Summer. You can get smaller varieties - I believe even a rocky sized one.

Do you need a pond or a large wet area Dawn , we only have half an acre and it is quite dry ?

13 Jan, 2009

Well, I must admit this is set next to our brook but having said that, I dont think they need to be in really wet areas to survive. Probably you could put the question to the members. We're the opposite of your then Amy, our land is and wet clay.

If I had one Dawn I would like the big one , something would have to go , so I think I will have to carry on admiring them from afar , I will have to content myself with having a peep at yours now and again LOL
