Lovely plants, I saw a clump of the white variety at Kew. I like the colour combination you have going on there, whats the purplish leaf in the background?

That's my Astelia nervosa 'Westland'. It was beautifully marked with reddish striped leaves in the winter months, although I had to fleece it when we had that frost. It shows up better in the winter, I think, but it is a structural plant even now.

Now i really really like these! another one going straight on the wish list. do they like shady areas - i was thinking about my woodland bed - which is semi/dappled shade, but does get a fair bit of pm sun.

Yes, they are meant to prefer dappled shade, but I planted these in the fornt garden and they come up happily every year! Warning - they vanish soon after they've flowered, so I have to mark where they are.
