I have monarda coming up in mats too, well, it's way past the mat stage. Mine is M. fistulosa & I can't believe how it's spreading.

Mine is M. didyma... it's bright red and usually blooms on Canada day! (July1) looks like flower fireworks! will be early this year if it keeps up like this.

I planted mine from seed several years ago and I'd ordered M. didyma but somehow received fistulosa. It's great for covering a dry area. Maybe too great.

It amazes me how completely indifferent the monarda seems to the soil type...I have clay in one area and sandyloam in another...the monarda in the former seems to do as well as the one in the latter! I notice the same is true of the echinacea...it likes to take over too...but I just let it~ great plant and the birds and bees really love it. I am able to water when it becomes extremely dry..,. thankfully the droughts we experience are shorter than most... there is plenty of water where I live..for which my garden is grateful. : - )

Wow, really making a showing here. I'll have to look close this year if mine returns and keep this in mind. Might not be in the best spot if its spreads quickly.
