I didn’t expect to be writing a part two, but some of the comments on “part one” mentioned other plants, so I thought I would do a bit more research,i’ll make it as brief as possible in the hope that you don’t find it too boring, [there’s a lot of it, lol].

Steragram mentioned Raspberries and sprouts.

Raspberries:low in calories and saturated fats,
rich source of dietary fibre and anti-oxidants,
significant levels of phenolic flavonoid phytochemicals.
Scientific studies show that these anti-oxidants have potential health benefits against cancer, ageing , inflamation and neuro-degenerative diseases.
Contain an excellent source of vitamin c, which is a powerful natural anti-oxidant, 100 grams of raspberries gives 47% of d r i of vitamin c which helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents, counter inflamation, and scavenge harmful free radicals.
They also contain other anti-oxidants, are rich in several other health promoting flavonoid poly phenolic anti-oxidants, which all together act as protective scavengers against oxygen derived free radicals, and reactive oxygen species, that play a part in ageing and various disease processes.

Raspberries have an O R A C value [oxygen radical absorbance capacity] of about 4900 per 100 grams, making it among the top ranked o r a c fruits.

Good amounts of minerals are found such as potassium,
manganese, copper, iron and magnesium,

potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that help in controling heart rate and blood pressure.

Manganese is useed by the body as a co-factor for the anti-oxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase.

Copper is required in the production of red blood cells.

They also have other anti-oxidants and vitamins which act as co-factors and help the body in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fats.

Brussel sprouts: Cholesterol lowering if steamed rather than boiled, fibre related components bind together with bile acids when steamed, making it easier for bile acids to be excreted.

Arecent study has shown improved stability of d n a inside our white blood cells when about 110 grams are eaten daily.

Brussel sprouts account for more glucosinolate intake than any other food except broccoli, these are important nutrients, because they are the chemical starting points for a variety of cancer protective substances.

The cancer protection we get from sprouts is largely related to 4 specific glucosinulates, glucoraphanin, glucobrassicin, sinigrin and gluconasturtiian, research has shown that sprouts offer these cancer-preventing components in a special combination.

Sixpence mentioned beets, mango and carrots.

Beets are zero fats, low calorie, high carbohydrate, an instant energy source that will energise the whole body.

They contain soduim, maqgnesium, calcium, iron and phospherous, also a fibre food and contain vitamins a & c as well as niacin folic acid for production of new cells, guard against cancer, especially colonic cancer.

Medical studies have shown that including beets in your diet helps to protect against heart disease.

you can eat the leaves of raw beet to get rid of garlic breath, and hippocrates advocated the use of beet leaves as binding for healing wounds.

Betacyanin is the pigment that give beets their red colour, and which is responsible for helping tofight cancer.

Beets have been shown to help cleanse the blood, and the colon, and strengthen the gall bladder and liver.

Mango: is rich in pre-biotic dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and poly phenolic flavonoid anti-oxidant compounds.

According to new research mango fruit has been found to protect against colon, breast, leukaemia and prostate cancers.

They are an excellent source of vitaqmin a and flavonoids like beta-carotene, alpha carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin, together these compounds are known to have anti-oxidant properties, and are essential for vision.

Vitamin a is required for maintaining healthy mucous membranes and skin.

Consumption of fruits rich in carotenes is known to protect the body from lung and oral cavity cancers, plus many other benefits.

Carrots: other than that mentioned in “part one”, there is evidence from a new 10 year study, that they can reduce the risk of cardio-vascular disease.

They contain a wide variety of anti-oxidants, aned other health supporting nutrients.

Health benefits include cardio-vascular,and anti cancer, best researched in the area of colonic cancer.

Steaming provides the greatest flavour, and allows for more concentrated nutrient retention.

Dianebulley mentioned celandine.

Greater celandine is used in treating severe hepatic illnesses, biliary and renal diseases.
It eases liver and bile pains, and is beneficial to metabolism.

Externally it is used to controlskin diseases, treating skin tuberculosis, treating wounds, fistula’s, psoriasis, warts or callosities, it is also efficient in cases of skin cancer and eczema’s that are hard to treat, can also be used as an adjuvant against baldness[ alopecia] also having the property of fortyfying the the hair strands, plus many more.

Unfortunately this plant is poisonous, so should be used very carefully.

Lesser celandine: Which despite it’s name is not related to greater celandine is used to treat haemorroids.

Aquesetum arvense: otherwise known as the dreaded horse tail weed has it’s uses, it controls internal and external bleeding, and is an astringent healing herb, but it’s main effect is on the genito-urinary system.

It also helps to rejuvenate the hair, nails and skin, increasing calcium absorbtion, and helping to rebuild connective tissue.

It is the plant that absorbs more gold from the soil than any other plant, [although in minute amounts], making it useful in treating arthritis.

It contains silicic acid, potassium, aluminium salts, flavonoids, equisetic acids and alkaloids.

And if you’re still reading CONGRATULATIONS,

I hope you enjoyed reading, Derek.

Whats occ please ?

Have printed this up, as most interesting. It came up a bit feint, just readable in a good light.

These plant remedies are no coincidence I am sure. They were there before mankind emerged, therefore they were created by God to help us survive.

I once did a Flower Festival project on this subject. Dug up all the 'weeds' I wanted to use, and potted on. They just about lasted the 5 days during which we set up the Festival and the 2 days of public viewing. It was quite traumatic. I wouldnt attempt it again. Ha ha.

Thanks Derek its been a fascinating read again, we have lost the instincts to heal ourselves with the gifts around us I think

Happy healthy new year to us all xxx

Yes, thank you for all your research.
I have had recurring kidney stones and one kidney to protect. I drink dandelion root tea along with tinctures of cornsilk, marshmallow and hydrangea and keep my fingers firmly crossed!! I find aloe vera useful too, so gentle on the tummy. All that along with a new idea to me which helps greatly (since last week went into hospital with sever tummy ache) is chewing each mouth full of food about 30 times...I find I am also loosing weight that way!
Popped this along with your previous blog into favourites to read as and when I need!

Merry christmas to you!

Hi Derek, I have just been making some Oat Biscuits, as like them for breakfast.
What is the difference nutritionally between Oat Bran and Wheatgerm ?
I presume Oat Bran is the outside of the Oat seed crushed up,
and Wheatgerm is the inside of the Wheat seed crushed up.
Why cant we buy Oat Germ ?
Would the biscuits be more nutritious if I used Wheatgerm in the recipe instead of Oat Bran ?

Thank you very much for your comments,
Homebird, Diannebulley, pamg, lulu33, sorry to hear you have kidney problems, hope you're feeling much better for Christmas, Annella, I made a new year resolution 20 years ago, and that was to stop making new year resolutions, and guess what, I have stuck to it, [first one ever], Terratoonie, lincslass, Steragram, diannebulley I'll try and answer your question:
There are 3 main parts to cereal grain, the bran, the germ and the endosperm.
The high fibre content of the bran is very beneficial, and several studies have shown that regular consumption may decrease cholesterol levels, and may also be a preventative for some kinds of cancer, especially when integrated into a balanced healthy diet, with plenty of exercise.
The endosperm is used to make flour, I wont bother with that.
The germ is is the reproductive part, this is the part that germinates and produces the plant.

Wheat germ nutritionally contains 23 nutrients, and has more of them than any other vegetable or grain per ounce.

It is a better source of potassium and iron than any other food source, and also has great quantities of riboflavin, calcium, zinc, magnesium and vitamins A, E, B1, and B3, the amount of protein, 28% is higher than levels found in most meat products.

Sorry I don't know why we can't buy oat germ, but I think your biscuits would be more nutritious with wheat germ, hope this helps Dianne, Derek.

Thank you Derek. Have copied this out. I have been using Wheatgerm in my porridge every morning for 36 years. People wonder why I am so healthy at 84, went swimming yesterday.
I also drink a lot of filtered water, or very weak tea.
Just dont want the commercially produced drinks anymore. Nature meant us to drink water so I do.

22 Dec, 2012

Thanks for the reply Diane, I never realized you were 84, by your comments I would have thought you were a lot younger than that, you must be doing something right lol.
I hope you have milk in your tea, it has been found that more people of asian descent get bowel cancer through drinking tea, than europeans, it's thought to be because asian people tend to drink it without milk, whereas most europeans tend to put milk in it, Derek.
Sorry that should read bladder cancer, but you can't go wrong with filtered water, Derek.

Its really true Derek, we are what we eat.The important thing is to keep the brain working. I remember in Junior School our headmaster saying to us
" Never let your brain go rusty !" Couldnt understand what he meant at the time, but I do understand now !
Gardening helps to keep the brain active, with seasonal work to be remembered and done. Its really a Science Subject.
I always read the Goy blogs and Questions, which I find most interesting.
