I decided at the back end of the summer, to make this into a wildlife pond as my other little pond with my fish in dont get any widlife in, or should i say any wildlife that went in, the fish would make sure they was’nt there long enough, as they eat most things, but on saying that about 2-3wks after doing it there was wildlife moving in, by the end of october there was some little black things in it, if there was one there was about 6-7 that i could see, cant take a photo of them as they are really small & move dead quick, but if anyone can tell me what they are it would be great, they look like a little tiny fish about half inch long, black on top with underside silver,,they are still in the pond, have never got any bigger, i know i’m thick but if they are fish, how on earth did they get there, i mean they dont have wings so they cant just fly, & see this and decide to stay and live in it, & they dont have legs to walk either, & no they are not tadpoles as i know what they look like, but really do look like miniture fish.

Difficult to know without a photograph. How about trying to fish one out with a sieve, put it on white plastic and photograph it with a coin for scale? I had some unidentified fish turn up in my pond once and when one was caught it was identified as a Roach. The eggs can only have arrived on the feet of a duck. You could have brought the eggs in with a plant you bought for the pond. Good luck with your fishing.

Yes, I guess fish can arrive as eggs.
Good thought.
Just like birds bringing seeds from other gardens.
Oh, Clarice. Maybe a bit too cold for fishing ? LOL

I'll have a go tomorrow if it is not frozen over, i've got a little fish net i use for my gold fish, what am i like Wagger, i bet your right about bringing them in on a pond plant.

TT it is cold but the little pond is only about 3ft by 2ft, it'll keep me out of mischief(think i spelt that wrong).

27 Dec, 2008

Mischief you've spelt completely correctly. Very good.:o)
Talking of spelling, I can't recall if you've tried my New Year Quiz on my blog.# 10. I'll go and check. LOL :o)

Yes, I checked. You have just found it. :o)

Of course Wagger quite right to say difficult to suggest what they may be Clarice.Apart from fish many insects have their larval stages in water .

Even those little hover flies that look likes bees lay there eggs in water along with many others and my first instinct would be some form of insect larvae.Especially as you state they do not appear to be growing .

Insect larvae much more resilient to changes in temperature and would suspect fish eggs require warmer temps to hatch in ? This only a theory Clarice as do not keep fish myself.

Have you considered alien life forms Clarice? Have there been any bright lights in your garden lately? Any weird moving lights in the sky? Strange looking footprints in the mud?? LOL

28 Dec, 2008

Great one, Gilli! I'm dubious about insect larvae - can't think of any that look like fish half inch long. They could have hatched in aug-sep and still be very small. Will be interesting to hear if they survive the winter. If we have a bad one a pond this size could freeze solid.

Yes, I asked in the photo section under the other picture of this lovely little pond as the whether or not the water gets too cold.
Clarice ~ does the pond every become icy ?
It is such a cute little pond :o)

Up to now TT it as not frozen, i have been outside for ages this morning trying to catch one of them little fish things, they may only be tiny things , but they cant half move as soon as i tough the water, they go straight into a peice of down pipe i put in when i first started to do the pond, perhaps thats why they are serviving the cold weather. I dont wont to disturb them to much, so if they are still there when weather gets warmer, i'll take some things out and see if i can catch one, i know there only little things but i dont wont to frighten them to death. You know the more i think of them the more they remind me of silver fish. They are about same size & colour.

I like your little pond Clarice. I hope you find out what those things are. especially if they're something nasty.

Hello everyone, relative 'newbie' Tracey sticking her twopenneth in now. Firstly, I love the pond Clarice. It never fails to amaze me just how quick 'life' appears when water is added to a container/area. Insect larvae, dragonfly, were the first things to appear in my very small pond (less than 3 foot 'round' and deep). You can bring all manner of things in on plants; it's a definite possibility something alive hitched a ride! I keep my very low voltage pump running a trickle type flow in winter (unless it gets very very cold) to try and stop it freezing completely, but where there's life there's a way.

Very interesting blog and some interesting suggestions! I had a pond years ago and was amazed at what appeared in it. My youngest daughter was about 4 and was helping me clean it out at one time when she ran screaming down the garden shouting that she had caught a crocodile!! Turned out it was a large black newt!!
