Dahlias

After reading Jacques blog yesterday regarding her purchases of Dahlia’s, I hot footed down to the town today and bought some myself – I’ve never grown these and am hoping that they do well, will have to read up on what they need/where they like to be planted. Reading your comments on them I understand that a lot of people dig them up before the first hard frosts? There is an allotment at the bottom of my road where someone grows Dahlia’s in abundance and so far I’ve never seen them being removed before winter – another gardening conundrum for me!
I just hope they end up looking as good in my garden as the picture on the packets! :0)
I decided to go for the yellow/white combo’s.

I don't have to under normal conditions - but I didn't this year, and of course I realise that I'll have lost mine. :-(((

they are wonderful. I sometimes lift them but usually they are planted very deep and then i put a mulch over the top. wether it has been enough this year i will have to wait and see. fingers crossed.

Hope they all grow well :0) As for taking them up for the winter, I am still undecided on that - will check the allotment later in the year to see if any come up.

It's always best to lift the tubers for overwintering as they get cold and wet and then rot if they are left in the ground.
