I'm Feeling Seedy

Well, on the negative side my e-mail address book has been invaded and all my contacts have been sent a spam! If you were affected, sorry, I will try and get it sorted asap.
On a much, much brighter note I have just received this years seed distribution list from the Scottish Rock Garden Club. It contains seed of almost 4,000 garden collected plants and from 400 plants collected in the wild! These seeds have been collected from all around the world.
Because Mrs MB and I collect and submit seed to the exchange we are allowed to select 25 packets of seed as our main order for the princely sum of just £4. If we wish to order more seed then we pay an extra £5 for every 25 packets. The varieties of seed vary from easy and common garden plants to those that could be considered very ‘challenging’.
For those GoYers who are interested in propogating their own plants I very much recommend joining one of the national plant societies, not just the SRGC, to take advantage of the seed lists. Joining the SRGC, for example, will currently cost £16:50 for an individual membership then the £4 for the seed. That is less than £1 per packet for some interesting seeds. How does that compare with your local garden centre?
In the SRGC we have numerous overseas members who join only for the seeds. More local members also benefit from the activities of the societies.

Thanks for that, Bulbaholic. I belong to the RHS, and they run a similar seed scheme. You can certainly get some very unusual seeds by joining groups and societies like this!

Oh - I forgot to sympathise over the 'invasion'! :-(((

Spam spam the curse of modern life. Used to belong to The Hardy Plant Socy and they had the same sort of arrangement, which was very useful, was thinking of joining them again.

On the subject of spam and related matters, I've had a spyware detection system on my computer for 3 months, it just sits there, scanning occasionally, never detects anything - until Friday last and every day since - it has, in that time, detected an average of 60 "infections" every day and removed them - all adware, and the only places I've been have been here and another gardening site. Something's going on ....

yes i think plant societies are an excellent source of seed. I belong to the rhs and the hps and have had seed from the hps over the years.

I've not had a prob;em with infections yet [fingers and toes crossed]

The SRGC list is the only one that I have experience of, but it is such great fun.

Bamboo is that free your spyware detection system?

No, Dottydaisy - my ex bought himself the CD from Amazon and it came with a licence for up to 3 computers, so he put it on mine for me. Funny thing is, it's done nothing for 3 months, and now, every day, its cleaning out tons of stuff (243 yesterday!) - it all seems to be adware, nothing serious, but they're the things that watch what you do and where you go so they can target their marketing better.

I do use Adblock Plus, so hopefully it is doing the same, can be a worry these things, I wonder here all your adware is coming from? ideas ? you can pm me!!

Well, to resolve this one I have changed my e-mail. On recommendations of friends I have gone to googlemail which is supposed to be much more secure that hotmail and has many other advantages.
Lets hope that it works.

I do hope so, B!!

Is that true about googlemail? I have a gmail address, maybe I should use that more often. and Dotty - I notice its worse after I've been on the web - sometimes I check out plants on various websites, having googled a name, and its after that, but I don't know why its so bad currently - I've always done that without this busy-ness on the part of the spyware detector, so I'm really not sure.

Yes very odd, I use gmail as well, also yahoo but had an enormous amount of spam in the spam folder, set up another address for spam, when that is full, you can change it as many times as you like which is very useful.
