6 Our Garden

I haven’t described our garden yet as it has been all rather brown and barren up until now. Now, just over a week after the snow has left, everything is starting to spring (pardon the pun) into life. It is still not at its best but I felt that I would not be too ashamed to post a few pictures.
Our plot is just over a quarter of an acre of flat ground within a small village. The house, although very nice, has a rather large footprint. behind the garden is open countryside to the horizon which means we have a view but are exposed to easterly winds.

When we moved in to the garden it was mostly under grass. Now, the only grass that we have is as a weed to be pulled out. In our (nearly) twenty years here we have removed all the grass and turned it into raised beds, open beds or humus rich shade beds. I don’t know how many trees and shrubs we have but it must be way over the recommended limits for such.

One of the reasons that we bought this house in 1990 was for the view. We have an uninterupted view for twenty miles to the horizon on the Rafford hills which includes pasture land, willows along the banks of the burn (plus Gaint Hogweed!) and the forestry and low hills.

And the bulbs in the greenhouse are still going strong. This is just a selection of Iris, Crocus and Ipheon on a bench by the door.

I hope to blog further on this topic as the year progresses.

Wow! What stunning views! And, I have to add, what do you feed your bulbs on???? They look superb!!!

27 Feb, 2009

Thank you and yes, the views can be great.
I grow my bulbs in a compost of equal parts loam, grit and leafmould to which I add bonemeal to give a compost something similar to a John Innes #2. After the bulbs finish flowering I give a weak feed of liquid tomato fertiliser every couple of weeks until the leaves have died back when I stop feeding, leave (most) of the pots to go completely dry before repotting from June to August.

Thanks Bulbaholic! Don't laugh, but I've written down your instructions, so I will do the same. I've just ordered some bags for putting leaves in, as we gets loads of leaves every autumn. We are lucky in that we have lots of trees at the bottom of our garden, so no problem there!

I don't mean to be thick, but what is loam? (scratches head?) Thanks!

Hi Craftnutter, I'm not laughing; just remember that any suggestions that I put forward refer to the way that 'I' do things. I hate it when 'experts' pontificate and say that 'this is the way that it MUST be done'.
Loam is derived from grass turves that have been cut and then stacked upside down for several years until the grass has rotted off. For the last twenty years I have survived on sections of lawn that have been improved into flower beds etc. The lawns disappeared a few years ago so I am now living on borrowed time unless I can persuade a few neighbours to demolish their lawns. (If you like it is a quality soil. At a push it could be replaced with good garden soil).
I used to, and still do, put my leaves into sacks but recently hit on the idea of using those bags that builders merchants sell bulk sand and grit in. They hold 1 tonne and are supposed to be sent to the rubbish dump after use. They make excellent bins to tip the leaves into.

I dont like the sound of the weather forcast for your part of the country.....just when you thought it was safe to go out......

Thanks for your concerns, Daisy. In the event it wasn't too bad with just a smear of snow this morning that seems to be going away already (9am).
This is typical of the weather we can expect until the end of April. A few mild and sunny days then a day or two of cold weather with snow showers. There is still plenty of time for us to have another big dump but as the days get longer it will melt within just a day or two at the most.

Hi Bulbaholic...
Really looking forward to more pictures of your pretty rockeries and gravel gardens...
It would be lovely if you could put a few more on GoY as individual photos...because sometimes that then directs members to blogs so that they can see more... :o)
