A rainy walk around the back garden...

Hi everyone, I know the weather is wet and miserable and good for the gardens but i thought it a good opportunity to have a little look around the back garden to see how everything is growing and things seem to be coming along nicely….

The rose border is looking healthy with lots of new growth..lily bulbs and other summer perennials are starting to poke through soil now…we have started to dig up the old turf to make way for either new turf or a gravel path that will lead to the shed.. any suggestions about this would be very welcome!!! lol..

We had a collection of old rocks lying in the border so have made a small rockery by the shed..still need to buy more alpines though. This gives the border nice curved shapes now. I have moved some plants/shrubs around to fill the border – which include Double Hollyhocks Lupins etc..Salix Kilmarnock, Pieris, pink Camellia, Spirea, Lavender & herb garden and Santolina Lemon Fizz (which i picked up at a GC in the clearance for £2.49) The obelisk has now moved next to the shed with pink climbing rose ‘Handel’ growing nicely.

Another picture of the back border planted up..

The bird bath has been moved to the shady corner of the garden..where we have planted rhododendrons, heucheras, foxgloves, skimmia, spotted laurel and more..

Here is our new arch over the bench which we have planted on one side a very fragrant yellow climbing rose ‘Arthur Bell’ and on the other side honeysuckle Halliana…should be nice to sit there in the summer when everything is in bloom :)

Here we are creating a small Japanese corner on the patio..my favourite – Acers, Azalea and Japanese Quince..we have yet to buy some bamboo plants and a statue..we hope to replace some slabs with gravel and pebbles around this area..hoping to make it tranquil….

Morries 5 Hosta’s for £3 are coming on a treat now…

Walking past the veg patch on the way back to the house ..my little gem lettuce seedlings coming through…

Had to take a pic of this bleeding heart before going in..so pretty

The only thing to do whilst its raining outside and you can’t do any gardening is………………….bake a big fat victoria sponge!!!! comfort food and a big mug of hot tea….. mmmmmmmm

Thanks for taking the time to look at my blog…hope you enjoyed seeing a bit of my transformation.Although it doesn’t look very colourful at the moment i am hoping that in the next couple of months the garden will look a lot different!!

Your garden is coming on really well. It's made a big leap since we last saw it. Looking good!
I like the colour of your shed and I like the shady corner - good choices of plants there. Enjoy!

nice blog , this damn weather was okay for a week but here we had 2 full dry days in April and weekend more - a lot more! weather said 65% more than usual. we got rid of our grass for it got flooded a lot - glad we did this month. Gravel does drain loads better and easier to maintain :)))))))))

Great choice of plants , bought some hollyhocks and foxgloves this year never had them before - and arthur bell rose is a corker of a rose !!!

lupins are a fav of mine also , lots of great plants and nice cake :D

That is such a transformation and all so thoughtfully done with your choice of plants.
I can just imagine how it will be sitting under your arch taking time to relax and enjoy your peaceful looking garden.

Thanks for your lovely comments...yep cake only lasted a couple of days!! Think we will have to put in a gravel path as our lawn gets flooded a lot too Paul. We are in the process of digging up our existing lawn and replacing it with fresh turf as it is patchy and compacted - the new border shows the grass up now! lol... :-))))

I had lots of problems with ours - I got so fed up with it I had to remove it - our garden gets a lot of shade in winter

Sludgy grass is a pain isn't it? Your garden looks fab with your gravel garden/paths..you can add many alpines and plants to soften them and add interest like you have!! Our garden like yours gets quite a lot of shade in wintertime from the conifers and trees surrounding our garden... it doesn't really dry out properly so the garden can be a touch 'glastonbury-esque' at times...always wearing wellies to take the weeds out!!!! lol.... :))) gravel is the way forward then!

It is a real nice feature I think - felt when I first ripped turf up stressed as once you commit that's it - I would suggest doing on a dry day and compacting the soil then adding gravel onto - rather than put blanket weed down - it's crap - smells and makes more weeds - you will love it :))))))
