Recently my dad has been scanning old family photos onto his computer so we can share them. I thought you might like to see some of my favourites that were taken in 1947 of the May Day celebrations when my dad went to Elstow school in Bedfordshire. Elstow village is mainly famous for being the birthplace of John Bunyan.

The first photo shows the procession leaving Elstow school

Making their way through the village this photo shows the floral throne for the May Queen. My dad is the little lad about centre of the pic smiling at the camera

Dad from the last photo but zoomed in

This is my favourite, showing Elstow Abbey, Moot Hall (a beautifully preserved old building) and my dad carrying the first of the Dove cages

Dancing on the Green

Releasing the Doves

One last photo. This was taken in 1961 of dad and me, note the funky wallpaper :o))

I am always fascinated by old photographs, especially family ones, when my dad passed away we had to empty our old family home, it was amazing how many photos there were to sort through, lots of memories brought back to mind..
Thankyou for sharing Annella....

Happy memories. May Day was always a very happy time at the village school I attended.
The teachers and parents did a wonderful job organising it all.

Thanks all. Sticki where did you go to school?

28 Feb, 2013

Wow they are lovely photos Annella, I can remember celebrating May Day we always had a May Queen which the school voted on who it was to be. We then had a show, we had dancers and fancy dress and a different theme every year. No one seems to celebrate like we did on Mayday in the olden days. LOL how old am I lol. seems like centuries away at times. lol. Brilliant blog thanks for sharing.

3 different schools in bedfordshire:

Denbeigh Road Luton
Aspley Heath Primary, Woburn Sands
Cedars, Leighton Buzzard

There are some lovely villages on the South side of Bedford Sticki, that's where I remember all the Maypoles. Do you know Northill, Ickwell & Old Warden not far from Biggleswade? I used to go to Aspley Heath with an old boyfriend years ago. We worked for Bedford hospital and used to deliver sterile equipment to Daneswood and Edgbury hospitals then we would sneak off for a while!

28 Feb, 2013

Old Warden rings a bell and I know of Biggleswade ~ but not well. Aspley Guise was about 2 miles from where I lived!!!

28 Feb, 2013

I have just changed my question Sticki please read again Lol!!

28 Feb, 2013

oh annella how amazing is that! cant remember edgbury [although names may have changed] but Daneswood i think was next door but one!!! our neighbour was the gardener for daneswood. oh, hold on ~ not sure now ~ was Daneswood right at the top if so that wasnt next door but my sister used to play with the little girl who lived in the lodge house for daneswood. i think we lived next to Homewood? i cant remember the names now ~ will have to check.

so you would have been visiting the woods at the top of the road!!!

28 Feb, 2013

I was very familiar with lots of woods in that area!!! The big blue van was hard to hide though Lol x

28 Feb, 2013

isnt that funny! we used to play in those woods all day, go on our bikes and make dens.

im sure i remember seeing a big blue van!!!

it would have been around 1964 - 1970 i think thats a bit early for the big blue van!!!

28 Feb, 2013

The big blue van was 1977 Sticki and I was 17.....Ahh back in the day :o)))x

28 Feb, 2013
