The Greenhouse.

By now, the greenhouse should be practically empty. As it is, with the weather being so filthy, there is barely room to move.
We overwinter as many of the acers as we can. Last Autumn we planted 7 out in the borders but had to give most of the potted ones some shelter for the colder months:

You can see how things can get out of control when both of us fall for a particular type of plant!
I also have quite a few palms and cannas taking up space:

This Phoenix canariensis was an amazing price, bought this week from a national chain. I bought one last year and that has survived the winter so I am very pleased.
I also haveother types which should be more hardy:

The cannas are just starting to sprout, but no sign of the 2 bananas which seem firm so I hope they will show up soon, fingers crossed.
I also have a number of peonies whch were too small to go out last autumn but should be ok to put out later this year.
I also have a few seedlings of peregrina and one of obovata which I am guarding with my life because I can’t find it anywhere to buy and probably couldn’t afford it if I did!!

peregrina

Obovata (year 4)!

Sometimes I pick up young, small shrubs from supermarkets and other outlets because they can be very good value. So far this month I have picked up and potted on spiraea and physocarpus. They have made amazing growth in 2-3 weeks:

One thing I am very happy about. I love the lilium ‘Mount Cook’. I bought it a few years ago and have been trying to track down a few more ever since. In desperation I tried descaling one last year and without really knowing what I was doing, plonked a few scales in compost and left them to it. This is the result. The shoots showed up last week. I don’t like using slug pellets but I’m blowed if I’m going to surrender them to the molluscs now!

I’m keen to get the Autumn-sown sweet peas out into the raised beds. I don’t usually have much luck with these but I am keeping my fingers crossed as I do like to have a few for cutting and I finally have somewhere to plant them out.

I have said in the past that dahlias don’t thrive for me. OH chose and potted these ones, they are growing well but don’t look much like the flowers on the packet:

I hope you all manage to get some gardening done over the Easter break as the weather is looking well up to its usual standard. Hopefully I shall be able to clear a much-needed space in here – especially as my small plastic greenhouse is choc-a-bloc too.

My greenhouse is also chocker block too. Lots of plants raised from seed. Though at this time of year I am doing the greenhouse hokey-cokey. On very mild nights they stay out but if cooler they are back in. Must be about 200 init and a further 100 out side.
well done with the lily scales. I have had some luck doing this with other bulbs.

Wow! Well done on keeping all your lovely young plants safe from the deluge! We have woken to beautiful blue sky and birdsong today. Things are looking up!

Sbg, I'm desperate to get more seeds going but no space at the moment. More rain due next week..

Yes, Karen, great day today. Out all morning in the garden and planted some foxgloves and other oddments. You could hae made crockery out of the clay!

Yes, Paul, I'm liking more 'tropical' plants and have a few now. The phoenix will have to go in to a decorative pot over the summer. We have new seating to put out and will arrange pots then - if it ever stops raining. I'm waiting for the Ark!

I must say that I have never over wintered Acers and they sail through it with no trouble.
You must have a huge greenhouse to shelter all your lovely plants, especially your tropical ones.

Ange, I over Wintered Hostas and a couple of Acers as I know from past losses they need to be sheltered.

I do love the final photo ... :o)

G'house is 10x8, Rose. Just as well it's not bigger!

Yes, Shirley, we lost some small ones last year so decided to mollycoddle as many as we could this. All have come through and we started to put them out yesterday.
Yes, Cookie does make a fine dahlia, doesn't she? Needless to say, they both have proper cat beds in there!

So much in your greenhouse Ange! Good to shelter all the tender ones though. Your sweet peas are much further on than mine, I must say I am bothered about the pigeons come planting out time.. :(
That is a very pretty dahlia Black Cat and that reminds me I've lily corms to get started, job for today...out of the rain.

Great blog Ange. Love your “dahlia” Cookie, and love your “supermarket” Spiraea. I agree how satisfying it is when seeds actually germinate … I sowed some Gypsophila in my raised bed a week ago and was thrilled to see tiny growth this morning. You sound very cheerful even with so much to do, but we all like to get busy in our gardens, and we have been lucky with the milder Easter weekend.
