Replacing 20 Year Old Trellis

We thought we would replace some old trellis, that I made and fitted, 20 years ago when we moved into this new house. This wall is south/west facing so it gets direct sun in the afternoon and evening. “Out with the OLD” ….. below.

I made two pieces of trellis 1.8 metres high x 60 cms wide.
This was then treated with 2 coats of Ronseal One Coat Fence Life, Forest Green. I add a little PVA to the Ronseal, Fence Life. This in my opinion, when thoroughly dry, makes the finish more water repellant.

“In with the NEW” …….. below.

The wood was bought from a builders merchant and cut to size at the yard. Total cost for the 2 sheets of trellis £12 including screws and treatment.

I hope you find this useful. Unfortunately unlike Terra, I don’t have any gorgeous dogs, that are good at carpentry to help ….. it’s all my own work … lol.

Useful blog, Alan ... I've added to GoYpedia ... Truffle is on his way to Cheshire with his hammer to fix that final nail for you ;o)

Job well done Alan and a bargain at that price, now can you please spare a while to come and fix mine, those sort of jobs are piling up here, they have to wait until the sowing and planting out is sorted.

Your old trellis looked better than at least two that I have! They were here when we moved and are extremely rickety, one pushed away from the wall by the honeysuckle (no pun intended) that is behind it. Every year I mean to cut the vine off and replace the trellis and every year it manages to stay suspended at a jaunty angle!

A very professional job Alan and both cheaper and stronger than anything you could get at the garden centre.
You'll have us all queuing up!

Karen... thank you, I have used the PVA addition before on parts of the fence and a side gate. I put a fresh coat on every three or four years and they look as good as new.

Steve, yes it is taller, as the top of the rose was unsupported. The timber was 3.6 metres long, so half of that gave me 1.8 metres (just short of 6 ft.).

Terra, I'll have the hammer, nail, bed and dog biscuits ready for Truffle ... can you give me an ETA please.

Sue, I would love to help, but you would you please check my availability with my OH (Wendy) ........ lol. Me and progress down my joblist ... nearest analogy would be walking up, a downwards moving escalator. PS I've been trying to tidy my garage for 20 years, just as I get near to starting it, another growing season starts.

Honeysuckle, at some stage you may have to take the "bull by the horns". You don't want your trellis/honeysuckle coming down in the high winds, that we seem to getting more of..... good luck and fingers crossed for you.

Sue, glad you like the trellis, it is nice and strong. Hopefully I will get a good few years out of it.
