One Fish, Two Fish....

Well, this is just an update on the progress of my new pond, which was made out of an old cistern tank.

So far, the water has remained nice and clear. The pond lilly has developed a few pretty leaves and I am delighted to report that there is a flower bud making its way to the surface.

I was a little concerned by the amount of mozzy larva in the water – and what they are going to turn into :-S I had planned not to have any fish as I wanted to encourage the frogs to spawn, but today I decided I needed something to eat the larva, so I splashed out (excuse the pun) and bought two little fishes – just over 1" long apeice.

After letting the water temperature equalise for a few minutes, I opened the bag and let the water mix a little and then left them to it for a bit…! At the top of hte photo, you can see a Water Hyacinth that I bought at the same time as I thought the fishes might like something to hide under.

Then I released the lucky pair into their new home. They swam around on their own for a few minutes in a bit of a daze, but then they found one another and swam around and explored together, which I thought was quite touching really…!

Unfortunately, just after this shot was taken, a football came sailing over the fence and hit the lovely Hosta (H. ‘Wide Brim’), bottom left of picture, breaking several of the leaves. At least it didn’t go in the pond where it might have hurt my little fishes or damaged my precious water lilly. If the flower bud had been damaged, I think I would have throttled somebody!!! x-D

Please excuse my trainer and the weeds! I have some nasturtian seedlings coming up in there, so I can’t hoe it at the moment… well that’s my excuse anyway… ;-)

Ok Ok Sid your pond is lovely and clear how did you get a straw bale into it? Footballs everywhere at present our garden also backs on to school playing field Jane works as a teaching assistant so I have to appear reasonable in her company - but when home alone...your water hyacinth will be lovely supposed to have a vanilla fragrance .Good luck to the little fishes ..oh go on then any names for them yet?

Ha ha ha - every day I go down the garden and expect to find it has all gone to pea-soup! I haven't done anything to keep the water clear tho - just two bunches of pond weed in there - can't be those can it? I think if I put a straw bale in there there would be no room for my little fishes :-D

Re names, my mother imaginatively suggested One and Two, then when I told her to be serious she suggested A and B then. Well, honestly.... Tut.

Maybe GoYers could suggest names for them? Bound to be better ones than my mum's ideas..... Splish and Splosh are already taken by my sister's fishes ;-)

Go for it, Sandra :-) This cistern tank was previously used as a water butt - it's designed to hold water, so I thought, why not? An ideal pond liner!

Given that they are swimming in a cistern how about ball and cock? To our transatlantic readers a ballcock is the mechanism which regulates water into a water tank (cistern)

Way to go Sid!! Looks lovely... may I suggest Orca and Willie! two famous whales! Good idea with the pond weed it's an oxygenator.. the fishies will also help keep your plants groomed as well and chomping down all those lovely larvae.....I bring my nymphaea in for the winter and I have three little fish left after losing all the rest, and they've spent the winter keeping the plants groomed and eating the algae... Algae won't kill anything so you don't have to be too worried about your fish should the water become a little green. Isn't nature wonderful? We just have to supply the elements and it ticks along amazingly.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bonkers. But what would people think?! x-D

Thanks Lori - good suggestions (and polite too - take note, Bonkers!) I went whale watching once off Vancouver Island and saw some orcas/killer whales - absolutely magnificent. Also visited the aqueriam in Vancouver and saw their whale - one of the saddest things I have ever seen - this magnificent creature just swimming in circles in the tiny pool. Can't understand their justification for keeping it there when there were wild whales people could see not far from shore. You have such wonderful wildlife in your country, Lori.

Polite? Well what is that thing called that regulates water into a cistern?- thank God you didnt use a bidet!Best behaviour I promise.

Ah you have a soft heart, Sid. Did you know that they closed the aquarium in Stanley Park? The whale was released off of Puget Sound in hopes he would reconnect with his pod... He was so used to people they were worried that he wouldn't be accepted by the wild whales.
No creature should be incarcerated...zoos give me the chills...but at least the powers that be in Van. got it right eventually. It's been a long time since but I seem to remember that the story did not have a happy ending.
Oh ...and perhaps Bonkers meant Sphere and RoosterPMSL......

18 May, 2008

Thanks Lori yes there was some form of innuendo but these things really are called that so sphere and rooster actually sounds pretty good now what you think Sid?

I'm now planning a bidet fountain - think it could be quite elegant squirting into the cistern tank - thanks for the inspiration Bonkers!!! (Or maybe I'm telling a cock and ball story...?)

I LOVE Sphere and Rooster - defo the best suggestions so far. Esp when i think of my family wondering where on earth I got those names from........ te he

I remember when they released him...not sure how he has done..they had to take him to the far north I believe and keep him there to listen for his language from his home whales before they let him go...they are amazing mammals and having worked on the water and seen them swim and fish and hunt freely..cannot look at them in captivity...it is heart breaking...I once walked into the aquarium at Mystic Seaport on the coast of Connitcut and saw the big white Beluga floating like and angel looking out through the glass at the crowd...I nearly doubled over in pain and left quickly in tears... I still feel horrible knowing she was there pleading through that glass...

Sadly, I believe he was in fact sent to Sea World or some such glorified circus. He was not well and did not live long. He was not released. Very sad.

If it was Keiko..he was gotten back to his family in Iceland..but he died there of pneumonia...

Yes, they did release Keiko - and I believe he lived for quite a while before sadly he died - he was just too weak I suppose. The Vancouver whale was not released. Like you, I find it upsetting to see such big and intelligent animals cooped up in little ponds, especially in solitary confinement. Very very wrong. I'm pleased to say there are no captive whales or dolphins in the UK.

12 Feb, 2009

That is good news...the other sad part is that the whales they hold captive are taken from other waters and they say that is ok...they are not allowed to take them from our own waters..so they go get them from places that allow it...there are no more Orcas at Stanely Park...

Here is something from Born Free you should have an eye on...."Born Free was disturbed to hear that the standards written into UK legislation,
making it almost impossible for cetaceans to be kept in captivity in this country, are
currently under review. The Government has reportedly received an application for a
new dolphinarium to open in the UK.
Born Free will continue to monitor and address this situation in our attempts to keep the UK a
captive dolphin free zone."

People tend to get quite millitant about these things over here......I really don't thing anywhere would dare to get a whale - they'd have busloads of protesters camping out outside the doors! LOL

12 Feb, 2009

Why would anyone even apply for it ?

12 Feb, 2009

Oh dear - well I never expected this explanation for naming the fish. lol. I think providing a bidet for the gold fish is a bit extravagant if you don't mind me saying so. I tried a search for Rooster fish and discovered that Rooster fish can reach 4 feet in length and over one hundred pounds. The weight of the average fish hooked is about 20 pounds. The fish is popular as a game fish, but like most fish in the jack family (besides the amberjack and California Yellowtail) it is not considered a good eating fish. This link will show you what Rooster fish look like. http://www.mexfish.com/fish/roost/roost.htm As regards sphere there is a fish shere globe which you can see at this link: http://www.talariaenterprises.com/product_lists/parastone/products_large/esc04-escher-sphere-fish.html
or you can see a crazy fish sphere on Tingly beach at this link:

Good recycling idea for the cistern, liked the planting. Thanks Sarah for your photos and your blog. I congratulate Bonkersbon and Lori for their inspirational team work.

Lady Sarah - you might like to check out Princess Weeds11' s site where she has posted a photo of a rooster. I hope you enjoy the comments. You will see that this blog of yours inspired me to comment on that photo.
