2013 or 1913 garden?

You know how gardens have a feel to them or atmosphere, well I think ours has a sort of Art Nouveau style from the beginning of the 20th century, before the first World War. This means it’s 100 years out of date….Lol! Saying that though, the cottage is from the 18th century which makes the garden style quite new in comparison….:o).

Anyhow, here is how it is looking at the moment in the 21st century!

South facing side…..the Ivy there is beginning to take over on the wall, I’ve clipped back up to about 7ft…now just the top half to make a start at….:o((

Aconitum or Monkshood….always reliable and a lovely blue.

The Oriental poppies are beautiful this year, with so many buds to open.

Nepeta and Stachys, great plants for a sunny, and dry location.

Looking up towards the trellis and Rose arch……another couple of weeks and this should be a more colourful picture. Right at the back is a wall of golden Hop.

By the north facing wall, Festuca glauca is sparking with early morning dew.

White Verbascum Phoeniceum lights up a shady corner.

Pink and white Thalictrum adds a floaty airy feel to the shade garden.

A beautiful cream coloured Ivy adding interest on the old stonework.

The Sheild fern loves this location, damp and heavily shaded and north facing.

Another lovely Verbascum, this dusky pink really lends itself to an old style garden.

Scrambling through a red rambling rose is ivory Clematis Mrs G. Jackman.

At the foot of the Tamarisk, Foxgloves self-seed quite happily.

I love the colours of this dainty Aquilegia……seeds kindly sent last year from Amy….:o) You could imagine fairies at the bottom of the garden amongst these…:o).

Through the gate to the small veggie plot…..lots of runner beans growing there and tomatoes to put out…

Hope you’ve enjoyed looking at my 1913 garden in June 2013!

A really beautiful garden, Janey, so full of interest and a lovely view over the wall too. Those poppies are gorgeous too, mine are still buds!

Nothing dated in my opinion. It's a beautiful garden with such lovely mature plants. I've noticed my poppies are looking quite good this year too. Yours are beautiful.

I think fashion is irrelevant to garden really - yours is timeless as Stroller says. It must be wonderful to have a tall old wall like yours. Your flowers are gorgeous.

Thanks so much everyone....such lovely comments...:))
I'm very happy with it, as you are with your own garden, it's like a sanctuary, being between the walls and hidden. Though we're in the centre of the village, you could be wherever you want to be...:)

Hello Janey, you have so beautiful old garden! I like those gardens, with stone walls and many old trees casting shades on paths :-) I love also ivy on old walls, yours is a very special one, do you know its name? Pink verbascum is very very nice, I have two in my garden, but they are yellow, I have never heard - or let say- have never seen pink ones. Your oriental pink poppies are just very nice and suit with colours to that old fashioned space.
Now little bit tricky comment. I noticed, you have some of the plants, which belong to so called "witch garden". They are:
Clary Sage, White-seeded Poppy, Elfwort, Mugwort, Sage, Vervain, Yarrow, Belladonna, Foxglove, Henbane, Hyssop, Rowan, Rue, White Sage, Witch’s Broom, Wormwood, Monkshood, Hellebore. I have some of them, because I am not a total witch, lol. However, if your garden is Art Nouveu, you should have peonies and roses there. Did you have there some, when you bought this garden?

I love the garden, lovely plants and lovely setting. :O)

Your garden is full of interest and looks lovely. I'm not the sort of person for a modern minimalist look - all empty and boring. Give me an old fashioned style any day :o)

Thoroughly enjoyed the tour . . . you have a beautiful garden Janey, and I love Aquilegia 'Amy' lol!

21 Jun, 2013

Aw, thanks everyone!.......:)). Yes I agree Holly.....I just wish it was larger as there's no room left for anything else...lol!

My Owl was a Mothers day gift Sandra.....shall call her Erica as she's only tiny....:))

Thanks Katerina, the Ivy is Hedera Gold heart I think a great attraction for birds nesting and they love the berries in winter. Ha ha.....yes the cottage looks like it could have been a witch cottage or maybe alchemists..... love herbs and have planted lots of Mediterranean types as the soil's a bit poor and dry....not after today's downpour though! I'm not sure that I have all those you've named, but a good few, I like making Teas from them especially Sage. Lots of roses Katerina and just one Paeony which isn't very happy being neighbours with the poisonous Aconite!

Pleased you all like it, it would be great to have you visit,
We could have tea and cakes in the summer house which I shall call winter house, and is as yet a six inch base....lol! My camera is very kind too as it makes it look much bigger than it really is, 3 minutes and you'd have seen it all.....Ha ha!

Your garden is lovely. I like your terracota pots in the midst of the plants, they add so much interest.

22 Jun, 2013

You have a really lovely garden Janey, lots of inspiration there for me :o)

22 Jun, 2013

He he Sandra.....something to be said for getting older, when I remember what it is I'll let you know....:))

Cheers Gg! .......:))

Didn't spot your broomstick....where are you hiding it? ;)) Your garden is gorgeous and I love that yellow ivy. But I love all the plants on these pics Janey. You do know that Aconite is very poisonous don't you?...what am I thinking...of course you know that....that's why you've got it there...for one of your potions....;) Katarina...you're on to her...I just know you are!

I absolutely adore Art Nouveau as you may know. It would be good to introduce an A.N. piece of art wouldn't it....what do you think....did you see Lulu's A.N. lady on the wall of her garden? Perhaps you have something already.

Three minutes? I could spend three hours! :))

22 Jun, 2013

Lol...Karen....yes I keep threatening that Aconitum, then another piece pops up....it certainly loves it here!

Yes it would Karen, not sure what though, I shall have a look at Lulu's garden for inspiration.....what I would like is a miniature pool with spout from the wall, but first were having a summerhouse erected.....that would give you a couple of more minutes to look round.....ha.ha!

Wondrful garden Janey love your style and so many beutiful plants, those poppies are fantastic Victoria Louise? they are the ones I have but mine are quite a way behind yours! I love that Dusky Verbascum a real beauty;0)

23 Jun, 2013

You've got a beautiful, well thought out garden with plants for every location! That creamy Ivy looks great and the Verbascums and the Poppies..well all the plants! And glad your Runner Beans are doing well.I've sowed 4 lots of French Beans(2in potting shed and 2 direct in garden) but I only have a handful of plants to show for it and they aren't doing very well.Such cold winds constantly here this year!
Great blog and pictures!

24 Jun, 2013

Great blog beautiful garden:)

24 Jun, 2013

Thanks Carole....:)). Yes the Poppies have enjoyed the cool wet conditions haven't they....everything's flowering at once now!

Glad you like it Paul, yes the beans are really putting a spurt on now, hope yours are beginning to flourish....it's a bit disheartening isn't it when it's been so cold for so long, I've only planted 6 tomato plants.....I'm sure it'll be October before there's any fruit....lol!

Thanks Nana d!

26 Jun, 2013

It's looking that way with everyone's tomatoes , Janey, I think!
