Momma & Kittens

I’m afraid that I haven’t been in the garden as much this summer as I should have been, because i had another wee project underway.

Momma with her kittens (Inky, Dinky, Winky, & Stinky)

I took in a female cat & her wee kittens after her owner surrendered them to the local, greatly overpopulated, s.p.c.a. There is a huge problem in this area with feral & semi-feral cats breeding faster than homes can be found for them. All of these guys had upper respiratory infections and needed antibiotics; Momma got so sick she couldn’t nurse for a couple of weeks, so I ended up dropper feeding cat milk formula to kittens as well as a slurry of cat food/formula to Momma every few hours until all were healthy again.

The kittens are growing well!

The original plan was to keep Momma & integrate her into the household & find homes for the kittens, but she took a great dislike to both my cat & dog, so after bloodwork, immunizations & spaying, Momma is ready for her new role as second barn cat on a friends’ farm, where she can hunt to her heart’s delight and still have people to care for her. Of course, two of the kittens are now staying with us (the one I am now using for my icon) and the darker calico, the others have been immunized & found responsible homes with friends & family. It was a busy, slightly expensive, summer, but I enjoyed it all immensely!! I’ve had to re-home a number of houseplants as well with adventurous kittens running about the house, and am left with only the non-toxic ones where they can be gotten at…so it has been interesting from a gardener’s perspective as well! My older cat never so much as looked twice at a plant, so I wasn’t concerned, but now I realize how many are actually dangerous with feline ‘munchers’ about – eeek!! Oh well, it gives me an excuse to go plant shopping, and my daughter has a whole new collection of houseplants!

Inky is now a treasured pet named “Bootsie”

Winky is now part of our household and is called “Yoko”

Dinky is a well loved family member now named “Clementine”

Momma is happy in her new life and much healthier!

Stinky is part of our family and is now “Pina”
