A warm bath outdoors!

I always take pity on the garden birds when the weather is cold enough to freeze the water in the bird baths.

I may have said this before so indulge me if you will!

To keep the water from freezing for a few hours, about six if you use a long burning tea-light, simply place 3 house bricks in a triangle,or 4 in a square, place a lit tea-light on the grass/ground in the centre and balance your dish of water on the bricks.

Here’s proof it works …

That feels better! …

All done, hope the water is warm again tomorrow …

No birds will be bathing in here … can anyone explain this strange icy phenomenon? I put my little finger to the end of the ice and was surprised to find it was hollow!

Hopefully the temps will be a little warmer soon.

Lucky birds! What a good idea.

What a fantastic idea! I must try it. ☺☺

Terra, I think the idea came from GoY member Muddywalters a few years ago. I tried to search for his blogs but, same as last week, unable to search for anything on Goypedia. See if you have more luck please. I did contact the moderators but have had no response ... :o(

M'land, really funny later when a fat Pigeon sat in the water for ages!

Thanks Stera.

Go for it Waddy .. :o)

I have never heard of that idea Shirley. It sounds brilliant, although I would be worried about cats as its so near to the ground.I just go out with a jug of hot water and the ice disappears straight away.

Great idea. Hope someone can enlighten us on the ice...weird!

Brilliant idea Shirley.
I read you can do something similar in the greenhouse to give heat - a tealight under a clay upturned plant pot on bricks.

Brilliant idea Shirley.
I read you can do something similar in the greenhouse to give heat - a tealight under a terracotta upturned plant pot.

Rose, our old cat is indoors pretty much all day and we rarely see other cats in our garden so I think it's fine!

Karen, it really was strange, raining with a strong wind this morning, not my favourite weather for going out.

That sounds good Dawn ... :o)

That sounds great - thanks Shirley, I’ll try it :)

Hope it works well for you too Sheila ... I like to see the birds drinking and bathing and it's so difficult for them in the cold weather. Having said that, it's a really horrible wet day today ... :o(

Great idea. Must mention their use in the greenhouse to my OH. Gas heaters at the moment but an electrician coming Thursday to put in electrical heating. Bet the weather improves after that!!

It's bound to ... :o)

I've wondered about the tea light and plant pot idea - but a nightlight only burns for 4 hours - hope you don't have to get up on a freezing night to light a fresh one???

I set mine up today Shirley. Scott thinks I’m alittle eccentric!

Stera, I bought some six hour tea-lights in a supermarket and lit the first one at 9am, checked at 2.30pm and it was still alight! The water froze overnight so I did the same the following day. Temps have risen now so no need to keep the flame burning ...

Not at all Karen, just thoughtfully caring for the birds ... :o)

How strange to find that hollow ice tube Shirley. I wonder what caused it.
Nice that you are helping the wild birds :)

I know you aren't keen on the birds Hywel so thanks for looking in!! No ice around today, sun is shining, sky is blue ... :o)

Thanks for that 3d, a natural phenomenon I had never seen, or heard of, before.

Your welcome Shirley tulip.😊

That's ok Shirley.
The weather has turned rough ...

We drove along the coast road earlier and had to swerve to avoid a wheelie bin that had been blown into the road, quite a scary drive! Let's hope it all calms down soon ...

8 Feb, 2019

:O Bins are dangerous Shirley. I have lost three recently, they've been blown away by the wind and I've had to ask the council to bring me another.
