A sunny week in SW Cornwall

To celebrate my husband’s 70th birthday, I booked a cottage near Mawnan Smith – overlooking Porth Navas creek which runs into the Helford River. We were just 15 minutes from Falmouth where our younger son, Steve, lives, so he came and stayed with us for a few days to enjoy a mini holiday. We all loved the peace and quiet of the location. This is the view from our terrace.

We had a quick visit to see the Tall Ships moored at the docks in Falmouth Harbour, but with about 5,000 other tourists it was a bit noisy.

So we then found a quiet field on a steep slope where we had a wonderful view of the bay, and knew that the ships would be appearing one by one. This was to be the Parade of the Tall Ships on a beautiful day.

You can just make out the first Tall Ship in the distance!

More ships coming into view – it was a great atmosphere with all the little ships milling about.

We had big smiles on our faces watching this one – the largest one – coming straight towards us

Steve had heard that you could take a photo looking through the binoculars at the same time . . . so he tried it . . . not bad!

After our picnic and all that excitement, we went for a paddle and to look at the rock pools.

The next day we had a lovely walk along the cliff top.

Later in the week we visited the Glendurgan gardens which had enormous trees and rhodos, and this mystery shrub . . . any ideas please?

The flowers had a lovely fragrance.

A friend had given us a cream tea for OH’s birthday, and we made it “two cream coffees” – delicious!

We were staying a short walk from the Ferryboat Inn with its great view, and early one evening managed to get a table on their terrace for fish’n’chips and a bottle of red!

On our last day we drove to St Michael’s Mount, and all agreed that it had been a truly memorable holiday.

We were incredibly lucky to have such gorgeous weather in our favourite county :))

Mind you I mustn't grumble as we are having some gorgeous days and all that sunshine and Septembers colours can't ask for more...

Thank you Lincs . . yes, we were very lucky. I did say I could stay another week, but maybe it wouldn't be the same without the sun.

Wow Julia, you're a proper Cornish lass then. Yes, it really is a beautiful part of the country.

Thanks Susanne . . . yes, exactly my thought, especially the next morning when we woke to cloudy drizzle!

I know . . . but we were so lucky not to have more of it, and apparently it was quite gloomy in Herts while we were away: often it's the other way around!
