Fowey, Cornwall: short break

I had always wanted to visit Fowey, since reading about Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch – also known as ‘Q’ – who inspired Helene Hanff’s love of English literature. Apart from “84 Charing Cross Road”, she wrote (among others) “Q’s Legacy” which entertainingly gives the background to her famous book. Before going, I contacted a bookshop in Fowey to ask if they would be interested in buying some of Q’s books; they asked me to bring them (and paid me a surprising amount)!

So we booked a house with a view, and our younger son who lives in Falmouth drove up to join our brief holiday. We arrived in blazing sunshine:

OH on the terrace with welcome cuppa.

View from the terrace:

The little patch of garden with blue Geranium Rozanne(?)and California Poppies:

A handsome ‘pirate ship’ in the bay – see the huge skull on the stern?!

One of our outings was to the Pinetum and Pine Lodge Gardens on the outskirts of St Austell.

The next two photos show the ‘Winter Garden’

I liked the Japanese Garden, though it was shady:

I really fancied this Pseudopanax in their nursery, but we’re supposed to be downsizing :((

This is Polridmouth beach which we came to at the end of our last walk . . . and then had a hard climb back up the cliff path to the car park!

Although we also visited Polperro, Looe, the lovely Talland Bay and Polkerris, I didn’t take photos there as the weather was wild and wet and windy. Lovely beach cafes though – yummy scallops – and great memories of a break that seemed longer than four days!!
