elderberry

it appears there is elderberry growing out of the privet hedge in my garden and looks to be killing it,can i get rid of it without losing the privet

I agree with Seaburngirl, SBK definitely called for, but I'd suggest crawling under the bush and trying to locate the stem base of the elder, cutting it off there, making extra cuts into the top and applying the SBK, then cover the top with something, cling film, plastic bag, small flowerpot, whatever. You're more likely to kill off the elder if you can apply the treatment as near the root as possible.

gut the stem down as far as you can. carefully paint the cut stem with sbk stump & brushwood killer. i use a paint brush for this. try not to get it on the privet.
