last year i grew Maris Peer second early potatoes. They were luvly. This year I have done the same but some taste very earthy, why is this?

To a point I agree with Bulba but I would add that low light levels have caused less photosynthesis to take place, and it is this process that affects taste/flavour/size etc.
Fruit this year has been less sweet for the same reason.

Too much water, ie RAIN. We grow several varieties and, so far, all have been rather flavourless or earthy.
