My rose trees (which are very old) have been terrible this tear, can I replace them with flowering shrubs (someone told me they poisoned the ground) and, if I can have shrubs, which ones would you recommend. Thank you, Sylvia

I think what your friend meant was that you shouldn't replant with other roses in the same spot unless you replace the soil. Other shrubs will be quite OK. What you plant depends on what you want really - height and spread, evergreen or not, flowering season etc.
