when are onions ready to harvest?

I planted sets in late oct/early nov in a container outside to over winter. I live in west yorkshire at the beginning of the dales. The leaves look strong and healthy.

Hi Denice and welcome, you could always try scraping the soil away from one of the onions to see how big it is. If you are planning on keeping the onions for any length of time once you know they are well enough grown bend the tops over and leave for a few days before pulling. Then lay on the surface somewhere to dry for about a week before putting in a net or plaiting together - of course you possibly know all this already :-) One of these years we'll remember to sow some sets in autumn just to see what happens.
