Thanks to the ones who offered reasons (slugs) for my lupins not coming up this year.
I must admit, I never saw any slugs in my garden.
Will my lupins come back next year, or are they gone forever?

Slug tends to emerge at night to munch his/her way through tender plants. Unless they were very small plug plants your lupins will return next year. In fact, if you protect them they may well grow back this year.
