Hi Mookins, I'll make a guess. Creeping buttercup?? Has it flowered? How tall is it? Best wishes, JONATHAN H.

Mookins, I am betting on a buttercup, but someone could tell me I am wrong. Lets see when it flowers soon.

i have this in my garden i kind of inherited a bit when i moved some hostas from my dads garden last year. this year it went everywhere and i have thinned it down. not sure what it is but do know its not a weed as such.

Sorry Jonathan, we were posting at the same time, BUT great minds think alike. In Dorset we called them rams claws.

Certainly looks like buttercup

well that doesnt sound to bad, some parts have grown to about 20cm high and quite thickly, no flowers yet though. is it easy to get rid of?

Hi Mookins, How to deal with it may depend on how big an area it has spread over. If it is 'Creeping' Buttercup, it really is quite a difficult weed, a native wildflower. My Dad is a horticulturalist and he advised me about it once. It can be as stubborn as bindweed. If it isn't dealt with, your problem will likely get worse. You may need some Glyphosate, or plenty of elbow-power. If it is not 'Creeping' but a different type of buttercup, then it may be less of a problem. With best wishes ....... and to you too Doctorbob1, JONATHAN H.

It forks out quite easily, hence rams claws, lots of roots like a spider. The broken roots don't grow, but if you just pull the leaves off the crown will grow again. In a lawn it is quite easily controlled with Verdone.

looks like a buttercup to me, my garden is full of them and i can't get rid of them :o0

It is indeed Creeping Buttercup, hun. But don't worry, it will tire itself out in about 20 years, lol. (soz, couldn't resist, ha, ha).

Other names for it:
Devil’s Guts, Granny Threads, Ram’s Claws, Sitfast, Tether-toad

Super names aren't they? :o)

This is Creeping Buttercup Ranunculus repens. It is resistant to Roundup. You need to cut away the individual crowns. the white roots do not grow again. or fork it out It doesnt need to flower much because it spreads by those running stems.
Those names are all new to me, but so very appropriate.

I agree its creeping buttercup. i find it does respond to roundup especially if you crush the leaves first.
I knew devils guts as creeping sow thistle as it has underground rhizomes like bindweed.

if you like it, its not a weed but a British native:o) I have many wild flowers lurking in unweeded places :o)

ok so it looks like its creeping buttercup, so now as its a wildflower Im a bit indecisive as to kill it off with roundup and such like, so if i juts dig it out its mainly where a paito will be so then it will just cover any bits missed.
quite looking forward to see it flower now, may even keep some for a pot
thanks everyone

Mookins - if you lay your patio on sand or suchlike, the wretched weed will pop up between the slabs.

DO NOT keep any - it's a pernicious weed (that's a long word!) and try to get it all out, if possible. I know it's a pain, but worth it.

8 May, 2009

Yes honey, you don't want to be lifting up the patio once you've laid it! Just keep a lil' bit in a pot. Don't know if it will come back next year but don't let it seed, or it'll be all over your garden again!

Nasty horrible weeds do laugh - especially the ones that hide, like baby nettles that lurk under plants and bite me when I don't wear my gloves!

I heard it - 'Har har har' it went!

9 May, 2009

thats what Im doing now, youre so funny and so very true they are cruel to us

Do you suffer from Hairy Bittercress?? It hides and the tiniest plant gets seedpods which shoot across the border when you touch it! Then, of course, they all grow as well.

Aaaaarrrggghhh!!!!!! (screaming)!!!

9 May, 2009

oooh that one sounds scary... will have a good look tomorrow. will google it now to find a picture and let you know... how weird!!

They can grow and seed at least three times in a growing season as they are so small when they flower. A real proverbial pain! They grow in a little rosette with a flower stem in the middle, tiny white flowers at the top.

yep that is creeping buttercup, got the damn thing myself.just have to keep digging it up
