Why did the tips of this heather turn brown overnight? I bought these about a month ago. It is 1 of 4 and they are all planted within an area of about 3m in the same raised bed. This is the only one that has brown tips. Could it be just needing watering because of the hot weather?

yes I suspect its a combination of the heat/sun and the stiff breeze. is it only the yellow tipped plants that have gone like this? the paler parts are more susceptible to sun damage.

The other 3 also have yellow tips but they didn't go brown.

Do you reckon it will recover if I water it regularly?

Do you have acid soil Garden fairy ?,because squinting at that label it looks like it says "calluna" which much prefers acid soil .There are heathers for alkaline soil but they tend to be winter ones .I've made a whole bed of those type out the front but Calluna just turns brown and dies in my soil.

Hi Susie, yes it is a calluna. Thanks for the reply. I know the soil is clay. I'm not sure whether that makes it acid or alkaline. I should buy a testing kit I guess. I have recently added manure, grit and sand as I was told it helps improve the clay soil. Would that have increased the acidity maybe?

Why not dig it up, greatly enlarge the planting hole and refill it with ericaceous compost. this will make that little area acid enough for callunas. You might need to give it a top dressing of the same every year, or water it with ericaceous feed.

I'd just leave them and see how they get on Garden fairy its a lot of bother and expense buying things to change your soil type and I'm not sure heathers worth it :-)

Thanks for your comments. Be it as there are 4 of them in the ground in that bed, I think I will wait and see what happens. If I loose just one out of the 4 its not too bad but if I see signs on the others too then I'll try helping them with the ericaceous compost.
