I seem to have acquired a soil fungus. How do I get rid of it? Will it do any harm?

The fungus is white and thread-like and is spreading. please help.

This sounds like the 'roots' (can't remember the right word)of a toadstool or mushroom. It shouldn't do any harm but you may get some interesting toadstools coming up this summer.
