What is the right time of the year to plant irises, please?

What varieties are best for a good mixture of colour, height and longevity?

there are species for virtally all seasons and height. dwarf spring ones such as reticulata, then there are the bearded irises that come in all shapes and sizes. they are grown from rhizomes and come in a great range of colours. they prefer dry hot spots. but there are others for damp places too.
welcome to GoY too.
