Lily Beetle....

I encountered these pretty pests for the first time ever this year. I got rid of the lilies and the compost, for a while they migrated on to my edible Honeysuckle, and then disappeared. I found these two this afternoon on kniphofia......Will they thrive without lilies to eat and breed on ?

Oh my goodness! On Kniphofias as well!!!! Squish them quickly. They do like Fritillaries as well as lilies, but I wouldn't get rid of your Kniphofias or compost etc. There is a spray you can buy if you don't mind chemicals.

According to the RHS, despite being found feeding on other plants, they only breed on Lilium and Fritillaries because that's what their larvae need to feed on, so your Kniphofias should be fine.

That's good news . I should be able to starve them out by next year then. Thank you

Make sure you have killed them when squished. My Nan used to put them in a tissue then squeeze, then open it to check, and if they had not died, then she would have to squeeze harder.

I bash them with a stone! (I also cut one in half with my secateurs - and nicked my hand as well - served me right for being so cruel!) Oh, and I also drop them in a bucket of water, because they can't swim. :-/ You didn't know that, did you!

I found another 3 all of them deceased beetles now.

If you have Tricrytis check them too.

I just place a tub of water with some old lillies leaves next to the base of the lillies. My kamakazi Lilly beatles seems so daft as to want to walk straight into the trap and die as they cannot swim. Tah dah!!! No chemical treatments at all then.

I'm intending to repot all of my lilies, partly to get rid of any lurkers, and partly because of those dratted vine weevils I had. I've got new bulbs on order, so I don't want to lose those next year.
