my friend has a plant that has suddenly appeared, large leaves, purple flower that turns into a green and dark purple lantern, a bit like a chinese lantern but open at the bottom. Help please

Hee hee hee, sorry Beattie... you know, I never even heard of this plant before last year, found out about it on here. I really wish it would pop up in my garden, I like it.

I planted seed from bought Golden Berry and got hundreds of seedlings that grew into the Nicandra physaloides.

You can increase your chances of it "popping up" in your garden by feeding the birds! its seed is used in some bird seed mixes

Well, clearly not in the mixes I use - been feeding the birds for ten years, never had one pop up yet. Plenty of cereal grasses and sunflowers, but no shoo fly...
