Why dont any of us use nice hazel rustic poles in our gardens - why do we all go to the garden centre and buy nasty imported bamboo canes ?

I'm just about to post a pic from last spring showing that we have planted some Hazel near our compost bin in the hope that one day we will be able to coppice them for use in the garden. You're right that our own wood looks better - I've also pinched Sid's idea and made a tripod from Buddleja prunings for our sweet peas this year.

I don't buy bamboo canes - I grow my own 'canes' via my big budleija bush - they are free and look far nicer than bamboo canes!
