If it is a seed pod, it looks like it is already ripe, burst open, and displaying the seeds for transport! Maybe Paeonia mlokosewitschii?

Pretty, Kasy! I guess that the black ones are viable? The shape of the pod on P. mlokosewitschii seems to fit better, but the foliage doesn't fit as well as your P. mascula. I wonder if they hybridise? : )

To be honest don't know much about them... Geffrye Museum in London was the only place I've seen them.
