Perhaps it's a theory that the competition will reduce the growth of the ivy. I can't see annual meadow grass winning a bout with an established ivy, can you?

No, but maybe it produces something at the roots like bracken which clears most competition out of the way, and we just don't know about it. Don't think its likely though...
