I've been given some old skirting board which has been painted - could I use this as a border for my vegetables beds? I'm concerned that the chemicals from the paint may seep into the soil.

Any chemicals should be pretty well tied up in the paint. If the paint is old enough it may contain lead but this should not transfer to any vegitables. The danger would be it you have a toddler who might chew on the boards.
