I find pulling them out and burning them on a bonfire works very well. You'll need to keep an eye out for seedlings growing later, but they're very easy to pull up when a couple of inches high. Heather's really not a problem - it doesn't regrow from little bits of root and isn't difficult to get out in my experience.
